He gave us a chin lift, then promptly disappeared back into shadow.

“How the hell? He ghosts us for days on end, then he suddenly shows up to help us out? What is that motherfucker on?” Jonah grumbled.

Aaron turned to us. “Later,” he said, before helping Jonah to carry my weight to their waiting vehicle.

As we went, I savored the sensation of the fresh air infusing my lungs.

The cage was over and done with.

I was free.

But there was a fuck of a long way to go until that could remain permanent.

Infidels Fall.

I watched quietly from the threshold of the bedroom as Jonah soothed and re-dressed Asher’s wounds again. He’d delicately rolled him onto his side to see to his back to deal with the sickening lashes there, careful not to dislodge the IV tubes that were pumping antibiotics, hydrating fluids, and painkillers into his system to keep him comfortable. Caleb had also brought a supply of the medication he’d apparently prescribed to him weeks back and those were in his system too, so he wouldn’t suffer withdrawal.

Ash was still sound asleep. He’d passed out in the van on their way back to the safehouse and he’d remained asleep for two straight days.

Those fuckers had really done a number on him.

It was fucking brutal.

So brutal that Jonah had puked all over the living room floor right after they’d arrived back.

I grimaced at the sight of Asher in such a state.

We weren’t used to seeing him as anything other than an unwavering pillar of strength and fortitude. Even when he was sick, or when he’d dislocated his shoulder recently, he hardly showed it, he didn’t slow down, didn’t stop, didn’t falter from being that all-powerful force.

We had no idea what mental and emotional damage had been done yet either.

That could be another level altogether.

Jesus Christ.

I watched J slide Ash’s beaded bracelet back on his wrist, then I looked away and stared down at the text that had come in shortly after they’d arrived back at the safehouse.

An actual response from Revenant after all this fucking time.

They’d told me that the fucker had shown up and saved them from a unit of Heretics.

Then he’d taken off into the ozone again.

I should’ve been there. I could’ve stopped him, at least long enough to get answers about Aurora. Having an extra body there could’ve made all the difference. Caleb had been the only one needed to stay back, working his magic with his laptop and sifting through all the data we were gonna use for the final push needed to bring down the Infidels.

But they’d deemed me too volatile for the mission.

Sure, I was, and I would be until Aurora was back here with us.

That shit could come in handy, though. It could be wielded as a weapon. And it would’ve been. I would’ve made sure of it.

Blocked ID: The blonde in the car explosion was a decoy. Explosion not my doing. Likely, Carson or Samuel. Aurora is safe and well. She’ll remain that way so long as you let her go. Don’t pursue. She deserves to live a normal life free of dangerous elements like you and your fathers.

At first, all I’d been able to focus on and rejoice in was the confirmation that she was well. That she was safe and she was being protected by one of the best.
