“You’re no match for Carson! You’ll never beat your father! He’ll run right over you. He’ll take everything you love and rip it all away. He’ll break you! Where’s that monster? Where’s that beast who holds all that power? Tucked away like a scared little bitch, is that it? You’re afraid of your own power. Like I said—fucking weak!”

A roar tore from Asher, his eyes snapped open, and then he lunged at Caleb, using their joined hands to pin him to the ground by his chest.

Caleb grinned up at him as Asher snarled in his face, his eyes black. “Excellent start.”

Start?

So, that had just been the least of it?

Fuck, I couldn’t watch any more.

I couldn’t see him being pulled any deeper, especially not with the methods Caleb was using, all the pain and torment he was using as a weapon against him in order to provoke him in specific ways.

I grimaced and turned away, heading through the house for the gym.

I hoped Kill and Aaron were making some headway with their side of things.

We needed Aurora back here now.

All the progress Asher had made and he was gonna throw it all away in order to win this war.

This would be the last fucking time.

After this whole shitshow was over and done with, once we put the enemy down, there would be no more of this, no more of him sacrificing for us.

Every time he did that, he lost pieces of himself forever.

Not everything was salvageable.

I just hoped there’d be enough left of him once this war was done.

There would be no such thing as victory in this thing if he was lost in the process.

There was no freedom for me without him.

“Was he like this last time?”

Aaron looked over at me from the driver’s seat of the non-descript black van we were waiting in for the opportune moment to strike.

I saw him register well what I was getting at.

But he clearly didn’t want to speak to it, because he tried to play dumb, asking, “Last time?”

“Last time Ash was in that dungeon. He took off for a few weeks afterward. Knowing what I know now, I’m guessing he was with you. That’s where he spent his recovery, yeah?”

“His physical recovery, yes.”

I frowned. “What about the rest?”

He shifted his weight in his seat. “There wasn’t a sexual or degradation and humiliation component in the dungeon like there was for the days he just spent at the slaughterhouse. That hits different for Ash. He’s all about control, dominance. They took that from him, undercut the very essence of his being in a very twisted and debilitating way.” He sighed. “The physical injuries will just be making that worse, because he feels weak and incapable when he needs to feel strong more than ever.”

I cursed under my breath.

“You’ve seen him as soon as he feels the strain of them, he just gives in to that weariness, doesn’t fight through it?”
