It didn’t require an emotional or sentimental response from me.

Not that I could offer up one right now.

With Caleb’s assistance, all I could feel now were things conducive to keeping this beast in me alive and at the forefront. Conviction, rage, the need to spill blood, to dominate, to destroy, and also a voracious sexual need to unleash some of that until we were able to enter into a hand-to-hand combat situation, where I’d then relish ripping apart every fucking person who stepped into my path, before I made it to my chief targets in Carson Monroe and Samuel Carmichael.

Anticipation thrummed through me as I savored the violent and sadistic images swirling around that beautiful scenario, of what I’d do to them, of their screams and pleas for me to spare them, to take away the pain, to show mercy.

I had no mercy left.

Not in this state.

And it was exactly what was needed to defeat the likes of them.

I took another drag of my smoke as I stood on the front porch, relishing the feel of the cool night air on my freshly showered body. A shower I’d taken myself without any assistance. I’d accepted and even relished the pain, using that state of mind to push through the weariness and make it my bitch finally.

I was back to my black jeans and open collar shirt, my hair styled in its former stellar way.

My phone buzzed just as I was about to take another drag. I snatched it up from the wooden railing.

Blocked ID: Message received.

A nasty smile twisted my lips, the satisfaction at having that fucker bend for me sending a jolt of pleasure through me.

Asher: Gonna need much more than that.

Blocked ID: It’s you again, not one of your entourage.

Asher: My no-nonsense message gave it away?

Blocked ID: The demand. The other guy spent a lot of time bargaining.

Asher: He’s considered the ‘nice one’ for a reason.

Blocked ID: We need to pool our resources.

Asher: Fool me once.

Blocked ID: No more bullshit.

Asher: Prove it.

Blocked ID: Aurora wants to come back to you. Only way I’ll allow that is if I’m there until this is over to ensure her safety. We end this together, or not at all. I also have vital intel for you on the Heretics.

Asher: You cut me out again, go around me, and I’ll run right over you.

Blocked ID: Volatile truce it is then.

Asher: Bring her. The truce will only take effect at that point.

Blocked ID: Seventy-two hours. I need to run damage control for Drew first.

Asher: Fine.

I locked my phone, then took a last drag of my smoke, before stubbing it out, then heading back into the house.

I found Caleb in the living room, leaning back on the couch with his feet kicked up on the coffee table as he read one of my books from the small bookshelf in the far corner, Great Expectations.

I took him in, those snake tattoos like mine encircling his arms peeking out through his white muscle tee. He was wearing a pair of gray sweats and just barefoot. His sandy-blond hair was disheveled. Relaxed.
