The last time we’d been together, I’d laid into him about keeping my dad from me. And then I’d been away with my dad all this time. He probably thought my sentiment that night had just been reinforced. That I hated him. That what we had was broken.

My dad’s actions had caused a fissure between us.

And I could see it there in Asher’s eyes.

He thought he’d already lost me.

Jesus Christ.

That had been a shitshow and a half.

Just before that had gone down, I’d caught sight of Asher pulling his whole intense stealth shit as he’d tried to play off his walk about the grounds as just a casual thing, him exercising and trying to get back to his physical prime.

But he’d gone a different route to the one he’d been using for the last couple of days since he’d started all that up. And he hadn’t been down for me or Aaron accompanying him this time either. I’d blinked and then he’d disappeared into the shadows.

Fortunately, I still had that tracker in his bracelet, unbeknownst to him.

Fuck, I should’ve known with the way he’d just blown off mine and Caleb’s concerns a few days ago about him working with Revenant.

It was just that I wasn’t used to seeing him in this beast state, he was so much harder to read like this.

He still hadn’t calmed down either.

He was out on the front porch smoking up a storm, while being watched like a hawk with Aaron basically glued to his side.

I was just glad that Kill hadn’t seen it.

It had actually been five days since we’d gotten confirmation that Aurora would be coming back to us, instead of the stated three by Revenant. They’d been delayed with having to secure Drew again. There had been some sort of complications that had eaten up more time than that fucker had initially figured.

With each moment that had gone by beyond that seventy-two hours, Kill had been growing more and more antsy with Aurora still not being here.

So he’d gone out with Caleb to pick up some more of his comfort food.

Normally, I would’ve headed out to back him up and ensure he kept up the stealth and didn’t leave a trail back to us, but I needed to stay with Asher, especially after Aaron had made it clear again to me that he was prepared to put him down if he lost control in any sort of destructive way. The fuck I was gonna let him go hardcore on my boy.

So Caleb had gone.

It was honestly a relief where he was concerned, because he’d been ramping up the sexual tension to an unbearable degree with his barely-contained need for Asher ever since Asher had shot him down. All Caleb had heard was his threat to destroy him sexually, something that got the fucker off, big time.

As if I wasn’t already hard-up where that was concerned being unable to go there with Asher, Caleb had just been pushing that to a hella challenging level.

“I’m sorry your welcome didn’t go so well,” I told Aurora as I continued stitching up Lance’s stab wound that Asher had inflicted.

After what he’d done to Asher, the last thing I wanted was to help the guy out. But I was doing it for Aurora and the bigger picture of him being an asset and all that.

I looked over at our woman as she sat on the edge of the couch, sipping at the glass of vodka that I’d poured for her when I’d seen how stressed and tense she’d been when we’d reached the house. I wasn’t fucking surprised.

I caught Lance shooting her a disapproving look every now and then at her drinking, but she just ignored it and continued with a few winces here and there because vodka really wasn’t her thing. Beggars couldn’t be choosers, though. We didn’t have any of her preferred tequila here, unfortunately. It was barebones, just vodka and a few beers on the alcohol front.

“I expected animosity. But that was… more.”

“Yeah, Asher isn’t exactly himself right now.”

“Or he’s exactly himself,” Lance countered.
