Page 9 of Burn It Down

He’d need every ounce of it to survive what those sick fucks were no doubt doing to him.

“How did you get in?” Jonah was asking him as I downed more of my coffee and looked on, while Caleb was typing rapidly on one of the laptops, looking between it and Asher’s phone.

“He gave me the password.”

“He did what?” I asked.

It was fucking unheard of. Ash didn’t do that. He just didn’t trust like that. Ever.

It made the whole thing even more worrying than it already was.

Jonah was right there with me, murmuring, “The fact he gave you the phone and the password, set this up in advance… he didn’t think he’d make it out. He put a backup in place for us, because he really thought he’d fall.”

“That’s not what it means,” Caleb countered. “He just wanted to ensure all bases were covered. He couldn’t give it to the two of you, because you were trapped at the gala too and under extreme scrutiny, you could’ve been taken as well. It had to be somebody outside the brotherhood.”

Jonah scrubbed his hand over his face, trying not to go too far down that road. I could see the pain all over his face, his struggle.

Caleb was obviously picking up on it too, and it had him telling us, “You should know, his password was very interesting. Very telling also.”

“What does that mean?” I asked, when J couldn’t summon a response.

“It was JoLnovahe0327.”

J and I frowned at one another.

Caleb told us, “The letters are an amalgamation of two words. ‘Jonah’ and ‘Love’. The other is obviously a day and a month.”

Jonah stilled. “The first time we…”

“Fucked?” Caleb asked.

Jonah growled protectively and more than a little possessively. “It was a lot more than that.”

Caleb held up his hands. “Not doubting that, enforcer.”

I grasped J’s shoulder. “He’s here to help. It’s all right.”

At a hiss from Jonah, Caleb turned from the laptop and folded his arms across his chest as he faced us head-on. The guy had balls of steel to lay down any kind of challenge to us, rather than just keeping his head down and submitting, especially considering how worked up we were, and the fact that Jonah was giving off his real bloodlusting vibes toward the guy. No wonder Ash liked him. Two peas and all that.

“I am here to help,” he told us. He zeroed in on Jonah. “And, no, it’s not just because I have a love for Ash’s monster cock and what he can do so fucking well with it.” He licked his lips, savoring the memories, ignoring the rumbling from Jonah. “He’s a brother-in-arms to me as well. And I respect the fuck out of him for what he’s done and what he’s trying to accomplish here, despite the many forces acting against him. I want him pulled out of the hellscape he’s no doubt enduring just as much as you do. Let all the rest go and work with me and we’ll get this done. You keep coming at me then it’s going to slow everything down and you both know how every moment counts when Carson Monroe unleashes the full force of his brutality upon him.”

“All right,” I agreed.

Jonah grunted, but then gave a nod, “For Ash.”

“And Aurora,” I said.

The two of them exchanged a look, before Caleb caught J’s eye then told me, “Your girl too.”

Jonah stepped up closer, taking in the laptop and the phone screen all at once. “So, what do we have?”

“A lot.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?” I asked.

“For the overall mission Asher was working, yes. For our specific purposes of just trying to track him and your girl, not so much. There’s so much to sift through. The amount of data he’s gathered on the Infidels operations since he figured out the dollhouse sites is staggering. His contacts are also extensive, but coded. A code only known to him. That’s right, he made up his own code here. Christ Almighty.”

“Here,” Jonah said, pointing at a particular file or something. “We start here.”
