“Levi…” She sighs again. “Please don’t.”

I pull a long gulp from my beer and focus on Mac as I swallow. “Okay, I’m sorry.” And as sincere as I am in that, I do need to know about him. I bring my gaze back to the dark-haired beauty in front of me, “I do have one question for ya though,”

“Go on?”

I lift my chin in the direction of Mac and his buddy. “What’s going on with Mac?”

“Why should I tell you?” she stares at me, challenging me.

“I deserve that, but I’m trying to be a better person.”

She sighs loudly, “Fine.” Her head falls to her shoulders and groans, “There’s nothing.” She answers, steeling her gaze. I lift my brow. I want to believe her, but I’m skeptical.

“Don’t lie to me.” My brows pinch at the way the lie so easily falls from her lips, “I recognize the look of a guy who’s been rejected.”

Her eyes rolled and almost hit her hairline. “If you insist on knowing, I’d rather I tell you I suppose.” She huffs again. “We had a thing a while back.”

“And Reaper didn’t tell me?”

“I don’t think Reaper knew, at least I didn’t tell him. I’m only telling you now because there’s nothing there anymore, and what’s more is it has nothing to do with you. I was seventeen when we had a ‘thing’.” She reiterates the word with her fingers.

“A thing? Is that what you’re calling it?” I grin. I love her sass, I always have. “I take it this ‘thing” is over?”

“Yes.”

“Hm, who’s the other guy?”

“Liam Roberts. Goes by the name of Country. I’ve known Liam since high school. I think you met him once before he left town, maybe.” She turns around and looks at the guys and I swing her back to me.

“Don’t remember. But I don’t remember a lot from back then.” I then turn my stare back to pretty boy. “I’ll be watching him.”

“What the fuck. You have no right to keep an eye on anyone. Jesus Christ.” She growls.

Snorting quietly at her fire, I clutch her elbow and tug her to me, “Baby, where you are concerned, I’ll always be watching.”

“Why do you do this? Can’t you go back to the sixteen-year-old that I once knew?” she almost looks sad, but I don’t want to remember those days. They hurt. My jaw grits down as my mind works back in time and seeing my mom slumped in a corner from that cunt because I wasn’t big enough to stop him. “You were nice, not hardened from all this shit of the club.”

“No, I can’t.” Her eyes widen at my harsh tone as I shake my head, trying to rid my head of bad memories. “Unfortunately, I was hardened before I joined the club.” I turn my focus back on the angel that saved me all those years ago. She’s the only one that’s ever grounded me. “Please tell me we’ll be okay.”

“I don’t have a choice, do I?”

She turns to walk away but I reach out and grip her hip, stopping her and press my chest to her back. I lean in and whisper in her ear, “If Mac tries anything or upsets you, the fucker’s dead. I don’t trust him, Lu. He might be a brother in the club but not to me.”

She doesn’t turn around; she doesn’t glance to the side either. But I know she’s rolling her eyes at me.

As soon as I release her, she walks away. “Another beer, Chains?” She shouts as she reaches the bar.

She never calls me Chains, only ever by my given name. I bypass the two pricks and head back to Frisco to lean next to him, and I call back, “Why not,” I drain the contents of my bottle and push it away. As she screws off the cap of a new beer, she leaves it in front of me and takes away the empty with a small grin tipping her lips.

If there’s one thing I’m here to do in this life; it’s to protect Luna. My adult life started with her and I intend to end it with her too, no matter what I have to do, or what beating I have to take, I’ll get her to see she belongs with me.

As time passes and the bar fills up, I become obsessed with watching Mac. I watch every sly touch he makes and every little glint that sparks in his eye as he talks to her. His friend has left, now it’s just him and her.

“Did Reaper say he’s coming back here?” I ask Frisco, not taking my eyes from Luna and Mac.

“Nah, man.” Frisco answers.

“I can stay if you got shit to do?” I tear my eyes from Luna for a second as my cell rings in my pocket. I see Reaper’s name flashing up on the screen as I pull it out. I hit the accept button and hold it to my ear.
