He nods, his eyes wide as he looks away. I know he has some kind of link to the Souls, but I have no idea what. And he’s not shocked by what I said, he knows I’ll tear this fucking city up to get revenge, no matter who it is.

I tip the cup back and drain the rest of my coffee, I need to get back up there. I can’t stay here any longer.

My brows pull together as my gaze fixes over the rim of my cup. And what I see has me reeling. Am I seeing things? Is my mind playing tricks on me? As I pull the cup away from my mouth, I slap Reaper’s arm to get his attention, but I can see him deep in thought. “Reap.” I call his name while keeping my eyes on the figure across the road. “Reaper.” I call his name louder this time. “Look, over there, is that who I think it is?”

Reaper follows my pointed finger, “He’s fucking stupid if it is. But it does look like him. His slim build and his overly long beard are a total giveaway, I’ve never seen anyone look as shabby as that prick Mac does. He’s got a fucking nerve showing his face here.

“I’m gonna fucking kill him.” My blood boils as the rage builds to tipping point. I throw my cup in the trash and push off the wall, but Reaper stops me with a hand on my arm.

“Now who’s being stupid? I’ll get some brothers down here.” He reaches into his cut and pulls out his cell, just as he looks for a number a call comes through. He looks at me. “Pres?”

“Luna.” With sightings of Mac almost forgotten, I shoot off back through the door and into the hospital. I faintly hear him say we’re on our way back, but I’ve already reached the bank of elevators and am stabbing the call button.

Please let her be awake. That’s my mantra as I jump in the elevator, hoping and praying that she’s come through this.

CHAPTER 38

LUNA

My eyes feel weird, gritty, and my focus is fuzzy. I blink as I open my eyes, the bright light hits them and my eyelids flutter as I adjust to the light but it’s too bright.

Am I dreaming again? If I am, someone could turn the light off. It’s so bright.

“Luna, princess.”

Dad? I try to speak, but no sound comes out. My throat is so dry, I have no saliva to even swallow. My eyelids flicker some more but this time, instead of just light blinding me, I make out a person. “Princess?”

“Dad?” My voice is no more than a whisper, and a banging noise has my head moving toward it, but I close my eyes again.

“Is she awake?” A hand takes mine as fingers grasp tightly. “Luna, baby.”

“Levi.” I try to make my voice work but again it’s barely a whisper. Instead, I force my eyes open. I can’t make out the look in his eyes, I can barely make out his face - I just know it’s him. I’d recognize that voice anywhere. His hand strokes my hair as he presses a gentle a kiss to my forehead. “Oh Jesus, I thought I’d lost you.”Levi whispers against my temple.

“Someone get doc. I want her checked.”

I hear a cacophony of voices talk amongst themselves at the same time, it sounds jumbled in my foggy brain, and I can’t keep up. I can’t focus on anything other than the kisses that are being placed on my knuckles. Then I hear a new voice.

“Ahh, it seems Sleeping Beauty has awakened, finally.” I have no idea who that is, but if he thinks that’s funny, then he is hugely mistaken.

Oh, so doctor by day, comedian by night, great.

“Sweetheart, the doctor is here, he’s gonna check you over.” Levi’s hand releases me but I want to scream at him to say no.

The doctor leans over me and waves a light back and forth before my eyes. I try my best but it hurts, the light is so bright and my eyes are straining to follow its direction. “Let’s give you a drink.” The doctor cradles my head and lifts the cup to my lips. “Just small sips for now,” I do as he says. The water in my dry mouth is like heaven. It’s that good. As the coolness of the water soothes my throat, I feel a little more refreshed, even with the small sips, but I’m tired now.

“Okay Luna, I’ll let you rest. I’ll be back a little later.” I hear the doctor say but I don’t reply, instead I let my head fall to the side and close my eyes again. I have no idea how I’m ready for more sleep, but I feel myself drifting back off anyway.

“It’s okay baby, I’m here, I'm not going anywhere.”

Levi’s voice settles me, making me feel so safe. I’ve longed to hear that voice but it’s not long before it’s a soothing echo as sleep soon finds me again.
