He sighed. “I’m taking you to the apartment—against my better judgment.”

Kiana let go of the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. “Thank you.”

While his attention was on the streets in front of him, Kiana studied his profile.

The man was blond, had a strong jaw, a military-short haircut and full, sexy lips. Lips she’d felt against hers.

He was nothing like her ex-fiancé. Looking at Dev, Kiana wondered what she’d ever seen in Brandon Carlson.

Sure, Brandon was good-looking with his dark hair and dark eyes. But he’d spent a lot of time in front of a mirror to look that good. He’d had more product for his hair than Kiana had known existed.

Dev, on the other hand, didn’t need product to look good. He was naturally, ruggedly handsome. His arms were thickly muscled, and he had a healthy tan from hours spent outdoors.

Brandon had acquired his tan at a tanning salon, wanting to make certain it was even all over his body. His arms had never felt nearly as strong as when Dev’s had wrapped around her.

She couldn’t imagine Dev stealing a woman’s life savings to buy a sports car for himself.

Dev glanced at her, his brow wrinkling. “What?”

Kiana was glad it was dark in the car as her cheeks heated. “How do you feel about sports cars?”

He laughed. “They’re all right, I guess.”

“Have you ever owned one?”

“No.” He shrugged. “Never wanted one. I’d rather have a four-wheel-drive Jeep or SUV in case I want to explore roads less traveled. A sports car wouldn’t be practical. Besides, I don’t like getting down into them and back up out of them. I’ve always thought guys who owned sports cars had big egos.”

“And little dicks,” she finished.

Dev laughed out loud. “I didn’t say that.”

“No. I did.”

His eyes narrowed. “Do you know someone with a sports car?”

“I did.” Kiana looked away. “We’re almost to the apartment. You might want to park a street over. There’s another apartment complex before you get to Meredith’s. You could park there, and we can walk over.”

She guided him into the neighboring apartment complex.

He parked in the shadow of a large trash bin and got out.

Kiana met him at the rear of the car, where he’d popped open the trunk.

He pulled out the shoulder holster, clipped it onto his torso and opened a case containing a handgun. He checked the magazine for live rounds, then shoved the gun into the holster and slipped his arms into a zippered sweatshirt hoodie. Dev closed the trunk and turned to her. “You have the key to the apartment?” he asked.

She patted her pants pocket. “I do.”

He gave a curt nod. “If we’re to sneak up on the apartment complex without being spotted, you’ll have to follow me and do as I do.”

“Yes, sir,” she said her lips twitching. The man was so handsome when he was dead serious. “Lead the way.”

He frowned. “This isn’t a game.”

She touched his arm and nodded. “I know. I wouldn’t go back there if I didn’t think it was important. We’re running out of ideas and people we can question in our search for my friend. I certainly don’t want those thugs to find me or Meredith, and I don’t want to put you in danger again.”

He brushed his thumb across her cheek. “I’m not worried about me. I’m worried I won’t be enough to keep you safe.”

She captured his hand in hers and turned her face into his palm, pressing her lips to his skin. “You’re enough,” she whispered, staring up into his blue eyes for longer than she should have. “Come on. Let’s do this before I do something stupid.”
