Hawk frowned. “She can stay here in the hangar.”

Dev was shaking his head before Hawk finished talking. “We can’t leave her unprotected.”

“She could ride with me in the van,” George said.

Dev frowned. “She’s my responsibility. I’ll stay back with her.”

“George is better at computers and communications. He needs to be in the van,” Rex pointed out.

Dev reached for Kiana’s hand. “Kiana is my assignment.”

Kiana squeezed his fingers. “It’s all right. I know I can’t go with you to the exchange, but maybe I can assist in the communications van. As long as I’m with one of your team, I’ll be safe.”

Dev’s hand tightened around hers. “I’m staying with you.”

“We need every man we can muster,” Hawk said. “With Reid pulling guard duty at the hospital and George manning the comms van, losing one more to bodyguard duty will knock us down to eight. Even if all ten of the SEAL Team One were available, we’d only have eighteen men against what we estimate to be around thirty-five Demons, and we don’t know how many Honolulu police vehicles will be involved.

“You have to go with them,” Kiana pleaded. “You know how much this means to me. If it leads us another step closer to Meredith, you know I’d do whatever it takes to make that happen.”

Dev didn’t like the idea of leaving Kiana, even if he knew George would look out for her.

“I’ll be okay,” Kiana whispered. “I need you to go with them. Find a clue or someone who knows something to help us find Meredith.”

Hawk looked from Dev to Kiana and back to Dev. “It’s settled then. Kiana will be in the comms van with George on the periphery, well out of range of the Demons.”

Kiana nodded.

Dev didn’t like it. Until they found the person responsible for the attacks on Tish and Kiana, he wanted to keep Kiana in his sight at all times. She needed him.

His team needed him, too. It appeared as though he’d been volun-told what to do. He’d be on the team going in to secure the exchange site.

Chapter 13

While Dev’s team planned, Kiana listened, hanging back to avoid getting in the way. She wanted to know how they would manage to sneak past the Demons to get close enough to the drug delivery without being discovered until it was too late for the gang to do anything about it. It all sounded like an impossible and very dangerous mission.

Kiana’s gut knotted at the thought of Dev walking into the middle of the Order of the Demons. Would they shoot anyone they didn’t recognize? And what about Silas? Was he to be trusted? Would he let the gang know what was going down and set a trap for the Brotherhood Protectors and the Navy SEAL team?

The team spent the next couple of hours going over all possible scenarios, and then distributing communications devices, weapons, ammo and bullet-proof vests. Dev gave Kiana a radio headset. “For you to listen in to what’s going on.”

He fit it over her head and tested it to ensure it worked, and she knew what to expect.

She was thankful to be allowed to hear what was going on. It made her feel a little like she was included in the mission, though she wouldn’t be there physically.

Throughout the day, George monitored Silas’s location.

The gang member returned to the apartment complex and remained for an hour. Then, he left, heading for his home address, where Rex had gone to pick up Lacy and the baby.

As the sun descended behind the mountains, Hawk established communications via radio with the contingent from SEAL Team One. When he was satisfied they could communicate clearly, he nodded to his team. “They’re ready. It’s go time.”

The men loaded into the van and other rental vehicles.

Dev would ride in the van with George and some of the others until they were close enough to go the rest of the way on foot.

He slid the door open and helped Kiana up into the van, then climbed in beside her. While the others were filling their vehicles, he looked at Kiana. “Turn around.”

She frowned. “Why?”

He gave her a tight smile. “Just do it.”
