“What happened? Why are we here?” she whimpered, trying to grab her head but flinching when the chains touched her face.

“I don’t know. I think we were darted with wolfsbane or tranquilizers,” I said, remembering the mosquito bite I felt. “Did you feel something sting you?”

“On my arm. I thought it was a mosquito,” she said, rubbing her arm.

“We need to figure out where we are and how to get out of here,” I said, standing up and trying to look out the window on the door. I could see a small hallway and another door.

I went over to the window that showed the outside. The moon was up high in the sky. It was still full. The ground was at window level, but I couldn’t tell where we were.

“It’s still the same day. The moon is high but not at its peak. That means we’ve been missing for about three or four hours. Someone has to have noticed we’re missing,” I said to Evie.

“We’re in the pack grounds, right?” Evie asked.

“We must be. Somewhere. How would they sneak us out with all the security in place?” I wondered out loud.

“No one is allowed to leave, Cory. There’s no way to get us out. We have to be in Guardian Moon somewhere,” she said, a little more sure than before.

“Hopefully.” I slumped against the wall.

“No, Cory. I checked all of your plans. There were no holes. There’s no way we could have been smuggled out.”

We sat in silence for a while. I was lost in my own thoughts for a while until I heard Evie’s chains hit the ground. I looked over to see her rubbing her wrists, which were red but now free of her restraints. I stared at her with my mouth open.

“How the hell did you do that?” I asked her.

“I’m double-jointed. Remember how I used to freak you guys out with my knees?” she asked.

“Can you link someone?” I asked, standing back up.

“Yes,” she said, but her eyes didn’t glaze over like I thought they would.

“So do it! Get us out of here,” I urged, unsure of what she was waiting for.

“I will. Just as soon as we have a conversation,” she said, and my jaw dropped again, in disbelief now.

“NOW? You want to talk NOW?” I asked, my heart racing, despite the incredulity I was feeling.

“Yes, now.” She crossed her arms and stared at me. “I’m waiting.”

“Waiting for what? Evie, get us out of here. We can talk after.”

“I don’t think so. You’ve been avoiding me for two days, so we’re going to talk about it now.” Knowing how stubborn Evie was, I knew she meant her threat. So, I fisted my hands and released them a few times, trying to calm myself down.

“I’m sorry I kissed you and said everything I said. You have every right to do whatever you want with your life. It won’t happen again. I’ll stop bugging you and just let you do your work in peace,” I said, unable to look at her. “Can you get someone to help us now, please?”

“No,” she replied calmly, and my eyes snapped to hers.

“You wanted to talk. We talked. Get me out of here. I don’t want to pull rank on you, Evie, but if you don’t get us out here, I’ll have to use my alpha command,” I warned.

“Good luck doing that with poor Tenoch suppressed by the silver,” she challenged.

“What do you want from me?” I asked, getting agitated.

“Why are you avoiding me? Why can’t we talk about what happened between us?” she asked, and I looked away again.

“There’s nothing to talk about. I was in the wrong,” I said.

“You were in the wrong for kissing me?”
