“He was going to inject you with wolfsbane, Evie! How can you say that? He slapped you and knocked you out? How is that not hurting you?” Evie slumped back and refused to look at me. “What? What are you hiding from me, Evie?” A sudden thought penetrated my pain-addled mind, and before I knew it, I heard myself asking, “Have you been seeing him?” Her eyes snapped to me, and rage replaced the concern in her face.

“What the fuck, Cory?” she seethed, hurt visible on her face. “Do you really think I would do that to you? Do you still doubt my feelings even after we mated?” I looked down at my feet.

“No. But it hurts to know you went off to speak with him after you found out his mother was the mole. I thought you were trying to save him,” I replied softly.

“Oh, my love. It was all part of my plan.” I snapped my face back to her.

“Plan? What pl—” The door creaked, and I shut my trap, but a growl left my chest when Paolo stepped in. He ignored me and walked toward the bed.

“I need to get you out of here. It’s not safe anymore,” he told Evie, fiddling around with her chains.

“I’m not leaving Cory,” Evie hissed, trying to struggle out of his grip.

“Stop struggling,” Paolo growled.

“Get your hands off my mate!” I warned.

“Shut up! I’m trying to save her!” Paolo spat without looking at me.

“Don’t touch me!” Evie growled at him, pushing him away.

“Evie, stop! They’re going to kill him tonight. I need to get you out of here, or you’ll die too!” he snarled in her face, forcing both of us to stand still. I swallowed hard.

“I’m no—”

“You should go with him, Evie,” I told her quietly. Evie looked at me, and there were tears in her eyes.

“No, Cory, I won’t. I can’t.”

“You’ll die here with him if you don’t come,” Paolo growled at her.

“I won’t leave my mate.”

“Think of your pup,” Paolo said, finally unlocking the chain. Evie lunged forward, trying to get to me, but Paolo’s arm snaked around her waist, and he pulled her up until her feet were dangling off the ground. “You’re going to die if you stay here!”

“Go, Evie,” I pleaded at her. “I need you to live, baby. I love you.”

I wished I could make a grand gesture and promise to get her out of here, but I was in no condition. It was taking everything in me to continue standing. One of my legs, the one I hadn’t used to plunge the second dose of wolfsbane, was supporting most of my weight at the moment. Though I guess I should be thankful I was wearing a pair of shorts now, at least.

“Cory, please. You need to trust me,” Evie begged.

“You need to live. Live for me. Live for our pups.” I answered, remembering the Moon Goddess using that exact word when she talked about her pregnancy. Pups, not pup. Evie’s lip trembled, and then her face hardened.

“Okay,” she said. She stopped struggling, and Paolo set her down.

“You’ll come with me?” he asked.

“I’ll come with you, Paolo,” she answered, my heart breaking at the same time as I felt relieved to have her out of here.

“Good, let—”

“What time is it? I need to use the restroom before I go,” she interrupted.

“It’s ten. Can’t you hold it? We really need to go,” he said, and I had to swallow the growl when he caressed her cheek. Evie flinched, and Paolo dropped his hand in defeat. “Are you really that repulsed by me that you won’t let me touch you, now? Didn’t you once love me?”

A laugh bubbled out of Evie, and she took a step back.

“You’re so fucked in the head, Paolo. I was fourteen. I didn’t know what love was. And even back then, it was always Cory that I carried in my heart. Not you. I didn’t break up with you because I was going to school, I broke up with you because in the four months I was away, I realized I didn’t feel anything for you.” As much as I loved the words she was saying, they were also dangerous, and I couldn’t mind-link to warn her to stop.
