“A hot woman is a hot woman, Evie. No matter the type of beast,” he insisted. Tozi growled in my head, but I simply rolled my eyes.

“Then I’m sure I’m fine,” I answered.

“What are you doing for lunch? I can meet you at your pack house?” he asked when we arrived at the building. Because of the security measures in place, he would not be allowed in.

“I can’t. I promised Molly I’d go see her for lunch,” I lied, but once the words left my mouth, it actually felt like a great idea.

“Who’s Molly?” he asked.

“My roommate’s daughter,” I answered, annoyed that he’d forgotten already.

“Oh. Another time, then. Have a good day at work, Evie.”

“You too, Paolo. Say hello to your mom for me,” I said. His mom was a very reserved woman, but polite. I wasn’t sure that she ever liked me much, but was never rude. I know very little about her other than Paolo telling me she’d been through something rough when she was younger.

“I will. She’d probably love having you over for dinner one night,” he said hopefully, making me smile politely.

“Sounds fun. Maybe once things settle down at work, and I’m not so exhausted every night.”

“Sounds good. It’s a standing offer. Just let us know,” he said and left.

“Who was that? I couldn’t see his face,” Zi asked when I walked in.

“Paolo,” I said. “Do you want to go see Molly with me for lunch? I thought we could grab something and surprise her.”

“Yes! That sounds good. How was your meeting?” she asked.

“Good, but disconcerting. I’ll tell you some stuff later. We need to check Dad’s setup and see if we can poke any holes in it so we can patch it up,” I said when she closed the door in my office.

“You think there’s a hole?” she asked. She knew how thorough Dad was with his work.

“No, but I want us to double-check. There’s so much at stake now. Our packs need to be safe, and I want to do whatever we can to make sure they are.”

“Okay, I’ll set up some time over the next week to see if I can find a way in from a disconnected server. What else?” she asked, taking out her tablet and beginning to type things out.

“I’ll be leaving for Columbus in three days for that meeting I told you about last night.”

“What can I do to help?” she asked, and I sighed.

“Cory’s coming with me. He wants me wired somehow. Do we have anything that won’t be caught by sensors?” I asked.

“I’ll take a look and see what Crescent Moon has available, but you could just mind-link while you’re there, can’t you?” she asked after writing more on the tablet.

“Yes, but Cory wants eyes, or at least ears. He’s worried, and with everything that happened last week, I can’t really argue with him right now.”

“You’re important to him,” she said, smiling softly.

“I’m a pack member. He’s the alpha. We were also childhood friends. It’s normal,” I told her.

“He’s important to you, too.” Her smile widened.

“Of course, for the same reasons. He’s my alpha and we’re friends.”

“Sure,” she said, handing me a green apple and not saying more. “Anyway, we have a new group of people coming in. I thought this might be a good time for you to introduce yourself to this batch and the ones showing up for their first day of work.”

“Oh, sounds like a good idea,” I agreed, taking a giant bite of my apple. “When are they showing up?”

“In about twenty minutes. Alpha Cory, Beta Jo or Gamma James will bring them as usual.”
