“We’ll be fine. Right, Molly?” James nudged Molly.

“Cahtoons!” Molly said, holding up a strawberry.

“I see. Have fun,” she said and led us into Evie’s room. It was clean and her bag was already on the bed. Her caramel and cinnamon scent permeated everything in here and helped me relax, but only slightly.

“Sit, please.” Zi motioned to a rug on the floor.

“I need a piece of hair from each of you,” she said, handing me a pair of scissors. I grabbed a piece from the back and cut a small chunk. Evie did the same, and we handed them to Zi.

She had a blue candle with my name carved on it and a green one with Evie’s. There were four bowls of crushed herbs in front of her, some red ribbon, the speaker and earrings in the middle of everything. She bundled our hair together and wrapped it with the speaker and earrings. She lit Evie’s candle and then mine. Shortly after my candle was lit, the flame flickered and went back out. After two more tries, Zi sighed.

“I was afraid of this,” she said.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Your bracelet is more powerful than my magic, Alpha. You’ll need to remove it in order for me to complete the spell,” Zi explained.

“Bra-this bracelet?” I asked, showing her the mal de ojo (evil eye) bracelet Uncle Helios had given all of us when I was around thirteen.

“Yes. It has a powerful protection spell on it. Didn’t you know?” she asked.

“N-no. It was a gift.”

“A very powerful gift, then. I won’t be able to cast the spell while you wear that.”

“Can I put it back on after?” I asked. I’d never taken off my bracelet. I didn’t even know why. It always felt comforting and after a while, it was just an extension of me. Something I grabbed onto when I was scared or anxious. I knew it was spelled so it shifted with me, but I didn’t know it had a protection spell on it.

“You can put it back on after the spell is over.” I sighed and nodded. I took off the bracelet and put it in my pocket.

Zi lit the flame again and smiled when it stayed lit this time. She grabbed the items and our hair and wrapped the ribbon around all the items to hold them together. She put them inside a circle in front of her before she grabbed one of the bowls.

“What’s in those?” I asked. I felt like I was being obnoxious, but I’d never willingly let anyone cast a spell on me. I was still a little apprehensive about it.

“These are herbs to represent the elements. Baby’s breath and Lavender for air.” She pointed to the one she was holding. “Cardamon and Ash for water. Carnations for fire. Cedarwood for earth,” she explained, so I nodded at her to continue and she grabbed the first bowl again.

I bind you Cory and Everly, and these items which connect you.
