“I took an early patrol shift. Seth’s mate went into labor.” He shrugged.

“For someone always looking to make sure people are rested, fed and happy, you sure seem to forget to do the same,” I said, crossing my arms. Cory had the decency to blush slightly and instead changed the subject.

“Have you heard anything about Nathan?” he asked. I thought about arguing but decided to cut him some slack instead.

“Yeah. Here.” I opened the browser I opened earlier this morning and showed him the video of the police removing Nathan from his home in Columbus with the headline ‘Serial rapist and hacker arrested.’

“Nice work,” he said, making me smile.

“I’m good at what I do.” I winked.

“Yeah. I hope I never piss you off,” he laughed. He quieted down while I ate, and then asked. “Why did you never do this for Zi? Why did she never do this?”

“She knows how to do this. She just doesn’t want anything that will call attention to her. It’s also not as easy to do this to supernaturals. We have different laws, and we can’t involve normal cops in pack business. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. I could make a plan, but I’m trying to respect her wishes,” I told him, remembering the conversation I had with Zi a few months after we first met.

“Fair enough. It was just a thought. I have to go into town and meet with your dad. We’re still trying to find that mole.” He sighed, standing up and covering his yawn with the back of his arm.

“You should take a nap, Cory,” I said, remembering the words Areli said to me last night.

“Later. I’ll go to sleep early,” he said.

“I’m going to hold you to that,” I said.

“Yes, ma’am.” He saluted before he left.

I watched Cory and Jo leave, but James stayed behind. He cleaned up after lunch, and I watched him looking over at Zi every time she left her office to answer questions. His eyes followed her everywhere.

‘Ask her on a date, already,’ I mind-linked him. He looked over at me, and I smiled.

‘I don’t think she likes me. She barely speaks to me.’ He answered, sighing into my head. He grabbed the last of the trash and then headed out, his shoulders sagging after one last look in Zi’s way.

Do we really need to play matchmaker when we haven’t gotten laid in almost four years? Tozi asked, groaning in my head.

Are you planning on letting me sleep with anyone who isn’t our mate again? I asked.

If you’re asking for my permission to mate with Cory, the answer is yes, she answered, making my eyes bug out of my head.

Seriously? You won’t bitch that they’re not our mate anymore if I start dating again? I asked incredulously.

I didn’t say anything of the sort. I said Cory.

You know what I think about that, I sighed, slumping back in my chair.

Then we don’t get laid again until we find our mate, she told me stubbornly.

Then we get to play matchmaker. If you won’t let me get laid, at least Zi can.

So what’s the plan? she asked, conceding the point.

I don’t know yet. Recon first, plan later.

I continued working after that until it was time to get home. Zi grabbed Molly and we cooked a simple meal before getting putting Molly to bed and I went to shower and crawled under the covers. It was early, but my brain was fried from writing code all day. Before I went to sleep, though, I reached out to Cory.

‘You better be in bed like you promised,’ I mind-linked.

‘Almost. I’m just trying to wrap a few things up, and I’ll head up to bed,’ he answered.

‘Go to bed, Cory,’ I said, and then to my surprise, I added, ‘before I go find you and tuck you in.’
