“You think I haven’t fought your kind before, alpha pup?” he snarled before blurring again.

I’ve always been grateful to the moon goddess for giving me a rational wolf. Yes, he’s an alpha wolf and had pride like no other, but he was smart. He had no problem retreating when the scales were not in our favor. We needed to live to protect our pack. We were no good to anyone dead.

The moment the man began to blur, Tenoch lifted his front paws and sunk them into the man as he reappeared before the man had any chance to do anything. Once on the ground, Tenoch ripped his throat out before he could so much as scream. The other three were quick to jump into action, but Tenoch didn’t give them a chance. Instead of barreling into a three-on-one fight like an arrogant alpha, he jumped out of the spot we were at, landed where they had previously stood, and took off running. We ran as fast as we could toward the pack grounds, evading the men as they continued to show up in front of us.

We were doing fine. I could see where the marker for the camera was. As we pushed our body for more speed, one of the men appeared in front of us, and I couldn’t help but notice that he was just out of camera range.

They fucking know, Tenoch growled. They knew all of our security. Rage filled us both, and instead of going around the man to avoid him, we barreled right into him, surprising the asshole and sending him flying. Unfortunately, he managed to get his hands into our sides as we collided, and Tenoch roared in pain as the metal claws dug into both of our sides and raked across our body as the man flew from us.

‘They’re attacking. I need help,’ I sent a mind-link to the pack that should reach at least the guards from here. I kept running, but I was quickly running out of energy as Tenoch struggled to heal us and keep moving forward. My sides were burning, and I couldn’t tell if it was from the damage or if the claws had been dipped in poison. The man we barreled into wasn’t moving, and the other two weren’t moving into the camera range. They simply watched to see if their friend was alive or not. I felt Tenoch’s consciousness slip away, and I continued to stumble in our wolf form toward the pack borders. Wolfsbane, it had to be wolfsbane. I needed to get medical attention because my injuries wouldn’t heal without the antidote.

I felt my front paws give way on me moments before I heard the growling and howling of my pack approaching. I collapsed and watched the other two quickly retreat when my pack warriors surrounded me.

‘Wolfsbane in the claws. Be careful,’ I managed to warn before I lost consciousness.

All I could smell was alcohol, and immediately knew I had been brought to the hospital. Tenoch was asleep in the back of my head, and my entire body felt sore. At least I wasn’t dead, and we’d gotten one of those men. I looked around the room. The machines were on and beeping steadily, and I had an IV in my hand. Normal protocol for wolfsbane poisoning included flushing it all from one’s system and monitoring the progress. The room was empty, and it looked dark outside.

What time was it? I looked around until I found the call button and pressed it since I didn’t want to reach out and wake up my family simply to ask questions. A minute after the call button was pushed, someone turned on the light and entered quickly. They removed the curtain that was blocking the door, and I saw Mrs. Roswell looking at me with a relieved look on her face.

“It’s good to see you awake, Alpha.” She sighed.

“How long have I been asleep?” I frowned.

“It’s two in the morning now so...about eight hours?” She counted in her head.

“No one else got hurt?” I asked.

“No. They removed the tiger claws from the man they found and the one you killed safely. We tested it, and they were coated wolfsbane, as you suspected.”

“And the man that was alive?”

“That, I don’t know. Beta Jo and Gamma James were dealing with it,” she answered.

“Right. I’ll ask them in the morning. Am I good to go home?” I asked, hoping my puppy eyes would get me released.

“I’m going to draw some blood, and if it comes clean of the wolfsbane, you can go home. Otherwise, you will be making yourself comfortable for the night,” she said, and I sighed; puppy eyes never worked on her.

She drew some blood and checked my vitals.

“I have to warn you, Alpha—”

“Just Cory, please,” I asked her.

“Cory, then. Luna Natalia is outside, and she’s pissed. I thought she would try to break in here to heal you.”

“Why is she still here? What if I slept until morning?” I frowned.

“I told them as such, but you try telling them to go home. They sent the kids home at least.” She patted my leg. “You are loved, Alpha Cory. Just get used to it. I’ll send them in while I have this tested. Good luck with the Luna.”

“Thank you.” I fidgeted uncomfortably and sat up, trying to ignore the soreness of my sides.

Mom and Dad burst through the door, followed by Aunt Nat, Uncle Helios, Uncle Theo, Aunt Kassie, Jo, James and, to my surprise, Evie.

“You guys should be sleeping,” I groaned.

“And we would be if it wasn’t for your stupid rules,” Aunt Nat chided. I fought the nerves at being reprimanded by her. I knew I was right, and I needed to stick to my guns, but it was hard to do with someone you respected as much as I respected her.

“Tia(Aunt)...” I tried.
