I went to bed feeling miserable and woke up the same. I made huevos rancheros for everyone and headed over to the office by myself this time. Once again, I saw Zi coming out of their house with Molly, sans Evie.

“Good morning,” I greeted them. Molly’s face lit up, but then looked behind me and her face fell.

“James?” she asked. I smiled and tried not to let it sting when both she and Zi looked disappointed that it was only me today.

“I’m afraid he had to go train people so they can protect us. He’s important, you know.” Her eyes got wide, and she nodded her big eyes at me.

“Evie working early again?” I asked Zi. Her face turned into a frown.

“I don’t think she came to bed, to be honest,” she answered. The same images that had flashed into my head last night came to the forefront, and I felt like I was drowning in hurt and jealousy.

“Did she leave again?” I asked, hoping against all hope that I was wrong and she’d simply left to chase down another lead.

“I don’t think so. She had her mind-link blocked, and she didn’t answer my text messages, but I know she’s within the pack because I tracked her phone. I haven’t really spoken to her much in the last two days.” She frowned again.

We walked into the building after dropping Molly off at daycare, and I followed her up to the top floor. There behind her desk was Evie typing away, but this time, I knew something was seriously wrong. Her usual put-together appearance was off. Her hair was messy, and she was wearing the same clothes as yesterday.

“Did she work all night?” I asked Zi.

“It looks like it.”

“Does she do that often?”

“No, but...” She looked over at me before looking at Evie again. “I think seeing you affected her more than she’s willing to admit.”

“Me? What did I do? Seeing me in the hospital affected her?” I asked. That was when I first noticed she’d been off. It would make sense a little, though I didn’t think seeing me in a hospital bed would affect her so much.

“Didn’t anyone tell you? Evie was still at the office when you got attacked. She heard your mind-link, and she went off to find you. She saw you collapse and sat next to you until they drove you to the hospital.”

Shit. Okay, so that might explain why she was acting so weird.

“Actually, now that I think about it, isn’t that what she was wearing two days ago?” She squinted.

“Are you telling me she has been working for two days and two nights without stopping?” I asked, frowning.

“I think so...” Zi bit her lip and looked up at me.

“Is this normal for her?”

“No. No, it’s not, Alpha.”

I sighed and pulled a hand through my hair. I pulled a container from the bag I was carrying and gave it to her.

“I’ll take care of Evie. Can you make sure everything is going well here?”

“Of course.” She nodded.

I walked into Evie’s office without knocking today.

“Evie, talk to me,” I begged.

“I’m almost done,” she said, not looking at me.

“Almost done with what?” I asked.

“The code for the phones. I’m almost done. I just need a few more hours,” she said. I set her food down in front of her and picked up all the granola bar wrappers, water bottles, and apple cores that littered her desk and threw them in the trash.

“Save, Evie,” I ordered.
