‘Not as awkward as I thought. It was...nice. He’s coming over on Friday to teach us how to cook some Mexican dishes.’ Clearly, I missed a lot in forty-eight hours. ‘How are you feeling?’

‘Rested,’ I answered, looking up at the source responsible for it briefly and trying to snuggle closer without waking him.

‘Good. We have a lot to go over tomorrow.’

‘Anything I should know now?’ I asked.

‘Nothing so urgent. Make sure you eat,’ she ordered before she shut the mind-link. I looked back up at Cory to see his eyes were open.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“You’ve asked me that so many times lately.”

“And you’ve lied to me most of those times,” he answered, but instead of anger, there was sadness in his voice.

“I didn’t know I was,” I answered honestly.

“Have you eaten more than granola bars and apples lately?” I shook my head, and he sighed, pushing back a strand of my hair that came loose from my braid.

“Come on, I’ll cook you something,” he said.

“You don’t have to cook for me, Cory,” I said while blushing and sitting up.

“I don’t have to do anything, Evie, but I’m offering. It’s almost time for dinner, you haven’t eaten, and neither have I. We’ll make a snack, and then I’ll cook dinner for all of us. I’ll even invite James, so Molly doesn’t look disappointed to see me by myself again.” He smirked, and I smiled.

“Do you think...”

“That they could be mates?” he finished for me, and I nodded. “I hope so. I haven’t seen James this smitten by anyone, let alone two people. They’re good for him. I haven’t seen him this motivated in a long time.”

“I haven’t seen Molly take to someone new like this and he makes Zi feel safe and... well, unburdened. She needs that. Someone who doesn’t look at her as a victim and yet still makes her feel safe with actions and not words.”

“Sounds like they need each other,” he agreed, following me to the kitchen.

“So, snacks...” I said, looking in the pantry. “We’ve got granola bars, jellybeans, chips, and fruit roll-ups.”

“I was thinking more along the lines of something with protein. How about I make us a couple of sandwiches to tie us over, and then we’ll go to the grocery store and grab some supplies because you’re missing some stuff?” he said, looking in the fridge and pulling out sandwich supplies.

“Okay,” I said, grabbing a fruit roll-up and sitting on the kitchen table. Cory blushed when I started eating the candy and turned around to busy himself with the sandwiches.

“Why are you blushing?” I asked.

“I…I’m just hungry.” Cory cleared his throat and continued to give me his back.

"People blush when they’re hungry?” I asked.

“I-My stomach grumbled, and I thought you might have heard it,” he lied. I could see his ears turning red from here.

I watched Cory toast some bread and make sandwiches before grabbing two water bottles and coming over to sit. We ate in silence before I went to change, and Cory grabbed his button-down. I came back into the kitchen to find him cleaning up. His sleeves were rolled up as he rinsed the plates and utensils. It made me yearn for a life with him. I wanted to see him doing something so mundane around our home. Unwillingly, my mind began to play out a life with Cory at my side, making my heart ache for it.

“Ready?” he asked, bringing me out of my thoughts.

“Ready,” I said.

“What are you making?” I asked when we walked into the store.

“Hmm.” He stopped as if he hadn’t thought about it. “Is Molly a picky eater?” he asked.

“Are you kidding? That girl eats anything you put in front of her,” I laughed.
