“I was not!” I said indignantly. Dad snorted, but sat down next to me again and took hold of the shard.

“Are you ready?” he asked, as I felt someone sit down next to me and the scent of caramel hit me. I looked up at Evie before I nodded to Dad.

“Are you okay?” I asked her. She laughed, but a small tear left her face.

“You’re the one that has a piece of window stuck in your abdomen and you’re asking me if I’m alright?” she asked. I gritted my teeth when I felt Dad pulling the glass shard but I pointed to her neck.

“You have marks on your neck,” I mentioned, desperately wanting to touch them to verify for myself that she was alright but aware that everyone’s eyes were on me.

“I’m fine. Uncle Seb made sure I didn’t get injured,” she answered, her eyes on mine, but flickering to where I could feel Aunt Nat healing me. I didn’t look down, I didn’t need to or want to. I knew it probably looked like a fucking mess while her magic worked on me, but all that mattered to me right now was that Evie was okay.

After she healed me, I was forced to sit on the bus while they finished up. I didn’t argue, because we were starting to grab the attention of the public and I was covered in blood. In the end, there were no casualties on our side and very few injuries. I ended up with the worst of it. We grabbed everything we could and I made sure they grab the picture and trinkets in Nickolas’ office before we left.

Everyone filed into the buses and began to drive away just as sirens could be heard approaching the building. We had just turned the corner when we felt and heard an explosion shake the block. We drove around the corner again and saw all of the top offices on fire.

‘If he could do that the whole time, why didn’t he do it while we were in there?’ Evie asked me. I looked back at where Uncle Theo was sitting with a far-off look on his face while Uncle Seb held him.

‘Maybe he didn’t want to kill his own brother,’ I answered and thought back to the conversation they had.

I knew Uncle Theo had been making sure Uncle Seb was getting in position and Aunt Nat was nearby in case we needed healing, but the conversation between brothers was real and I had seen the regret and love on Nickolas’ face when talking to his brother and there was no doubt of the pain in Uncle Theo’s eyes when he talked to him.

I knew Uncle Theo would be alright. We were all here for him, but I knew it would be worse for him when everything came to a head, and he had to live with the knowledge that his brother would have to die for us to have peace. He would need all of us then.

Chapter Fifteen

Evie

I was sleeping like shit. I thought it was bad when I saw Tenoch collapse outside of the pack. It was a hundred times worse seeing Cory crashing through the window and almost falling to his death.

The lack of sleep was making me moodier and sending my anxiety through the roof. None of my usual tricks were working, and it was only a matter of time before people noticed. I was having to carry my fidget toys everywhere with me so I could calm myself down between meetings.

It was Wednesday, and with the full moon this Friday, everyone was tense and on high alert. The full moon was supposed to take place at Guardian Moon this month, and we were all working overtime to coordinate the security measures for it. No one wanted a repeat of last month.

I was at a meeting with Zi, Jo and James this evening. Cory went to Guardian Moon with Dad to oversee the schedule for patrol and rotations. A lot of mated warriors volunteered to do the patrols. Each team was going to have more men, and the number of teams were doubled.

Crescent Moon was also getting full security measures for the full moon because it was a way into Guardian Moon. Blue Moon was being escorted to and from the pack grounds. We were taking no chances. Zi and I were tasked with making sure all the ranked members had access to the cameras, security measures, and com systems. On top of that, we needed to teach them how to access, work and engage with them over the next few days.

I sent Zi home while I paced around the empty office. The programs Dad set up for the pack houses were top-of-the-line but not user-friendly. I needed to figure out the best way to make them so. Was it to create an interface, or did I just need to suck it up and create a course for them to learn how to use it?

I was pacing, twitching, hungry and tired. I couldn’t fucking think straight. I walked over to my purse and looked through it. I pulled out one of my anxiety tools and sat down. My fingers began playing with it on their own, and I slowly felt my brain start to calm down. Even Tozi finally settled and sat down with her tail slowly swishing back and forth, and a plan finally started to formulate in my head.

“What is that you’re playing with, Evie?” James, Jo and Meli came inside the conference room. I stopped, my fingers frozen and the heat coming up to my face.

“It’s uh...” I started.

“It sounded lovely,” Mel said.

“I...”

“It sounded so cool. How did you learn how to use it?” James asked, grabbing the little tool and inspecting it.

“James, give it back,” I said, trying to grab it from him. He moved it out of my reach and walked around to the other side of the meeting table.

“Come on, just tell me what it is,” he goaded.

“It’s called a kalimba. It is almost like a mini piano. It helps me focus,” I said, furiously walking over to grab it back. I was not in the mood for this.

“Cool. Will you teach me? It’s so neat,” James replied, moving to the other side of the table, still keeping out of my reach. He kept plucking at the keys, and it was beginning to grate on my nerves.
