I nod. “I’ve been trying to prepare myself to bring it up, but I didn’t want to cause problems when things were going so well. I wasn’t sure how you felt, and I was worried that this happy little bubble we’ve been living in would be broken.”

“Do I not show you every day how much you mean to me?”

“You do, but it’s been that way since we started this arrangement. By the time we reached our wedding day, I forgot we were pretending.”

“What are you saying, Monroe?”

“Nothing.” I shake my head and look over his shoulder at the cabinet as if it’s the most fascinating thing I’ve ever seen.

“Baby.” He grips my chin and turns me to face him. “Tell me.” There’s so much hope in his eyes, and what I now know is love shining back at me, that I tell him the truth I’ve been keeping to myself since this all started.

“I wanted to marry you. Not because I was helping you but because of the man you are. If I’m being honest with myself and with you, I was already half in love with you, if not all the way, but in denial the day we said our vows.”

“Everything you just said, I feel it deep in my soul. I love the life we’re building together. I want this life with you. I don’t want a fucking expiration date because my love for you will never expire.” With that, his lips crash with mine.

I lean into the kiss, giving him all of me. The pressure on my chest, of constantly worrying about the heartbreak that I was certain would come, is gone.

Legend, my husband of convenience, is in love with me.

He pulls his mouth from mine and starts trailing kisses down my neck.

“Does this mean we’re not getting divorced?” I ask.

He stops and lifts his head. “You’re not allowed to say that word.”

I smile and slide my arms around his neck. “I’ve spent months wanting to tell you how I feel. Now that it’s out there, I want to make sure there are no misunderstandings.” I know what he said, but I just need to hear it clearly because forever with him is almost too good to be true.

“No divorce.” He furrows his brows at the word. “Forever, baby. You and me.”

“Forever.”

His hands are everywhere as he devours my mouth. “Did you wear this dress for me?” he asks through his kisses.

“I wore it because it’s cute, and it’s summer and hot as hell.”

“You’re hot as hell.” He slides his hands up beneath my dress. “Lift.”

I do, one side and then the other so that I’m no longer sitting on the material.

“Arms up.”

I follow his command and lift my arms, letting him pull my sundress off me.

“You’re so fucking beautiful.” He kisses my bare shoulder as he reaches behind my back and unclasps my bra, letting it fall to the floor.

“Legend.”

“Wife?”

“We’re in the kitchen.”

“Our kitchen.”

“This is where we cook.”

“And this is where I’m going to fuck my wife. Don’t worry about the counter. We can clean it.” He runs his hands over my hips until he reaches the thin strip of fabric around my waist. “How attached are we to these panties?” He’s gripping the sides so tight, they could snap, and I feel a rush of heat between my thighs.

“Not attached.” I shake my head with the words because I don’t want there to be any confusion. Panties can go. I just need him to not stop touching me.
