Heart heavy, back aching and wings tired, Marli followed Odson back to the Brandt family home, overlooking Black River.

Dragon Mountain

Stenlen Flintail stared at his former wingmen through the cell doors of their dungeon prison.

Merwin growled, “We’re not taking the fucking loyalty oath, Sten, so you can just piss off and leave us alone if you’re not here to release us.”

Sten shrugged, turning his back on the two males. He wasn’t going to waste his time. There were too many other issues popping up all over the mountain that he had to deal with.

“Asshole,” Clive called after him.

Stepping into the stone passage, Sten closed the antechamber door.

“Fucking traitor.”

Sten spun at the growl, facing the male that uttered the words. Gritting his teeth, his eyes narrowed on Craig, one of the former king’s deputies.

Former king. King Kargassa of the mountain tribe, who had ruled for centuries.

Sten swallowed.

My fault.

“What’s going to happen to Clive and Merwin?”

“That’s up to the new king.” Sten shrugged.

“Usurper,” Craig spat.

Sten sauntered toward Craig, heart pounding, fingers curling into fists. “You were there. You saw what happened.”

Craig’s features tightened.

“The entire tribe witnessed Kargassa name Mountainside as his heir. No one can deny that. If Kargassa couldn’t have predicted what happened next, how could any of the rest of us?”

“Mountainside murdered him. Kargassa’s blood is on you.”

Yes, it is.

He swallowed the rising guilt.

“And for what? A couple of Aeleftherian bitches?” Craig pressed.

Sten stepped into Craig’s personal space. “Is that who we are? A tribe of males that murder defenseless females on a whim?”

“He was our king.”

“He was.” Sten nodded.

And I will bear the responsibility of his death for the rest of my life.

My king, my mentor.

“Is there anything else you’d like to address?” Sten’s gaze flicked up and down at the deputy, then levelled on his eyes. “You took the oath. If you’ve changed your mind, you know your options.”

Craig’s lips compressed as he jerked his head. “No, sir.”

“Good. Eamerson handles complaints. I just enforce the rules.” He turned to go.
