Her head popped up to stare at him, eyebrows raised as she studied his face. “You don’t want to talk about it?”

He shrugged. “There’s nothing to talk about.”

She frowned.

He finally blew out his breath, rubbing his thumb against his temple. “All I have is a name.”

“Oh,” she whispered, then lay her head back on his chest.

Dimly, he heard the elevator door chime. He tensed as the sound of feet rushing along the halls drew his attention to the door.

Marli sat up when Kymri’s voice came through the door, followed by knocking. She frowned, leaving the bed to pull her clothes on.

Sten did the same, gathering his clothes to dress.

With a final glance to see that Sten was presentable, she opened the door several inches. “Kymri? What’s wrong?”

She pushed the door open. “We have to talk. Clive and Merwin—”

“Clive and Merwin, what?” Sten stepped forward as he finished buttoning his shirt.

Kymri’s eyes widened, glancing from Sten to Marli and back again. “They—I—they’ve disappeared.” She snapped her lips closed.

“What? Where’s Jori?”

“Looking for you,” Kymri scowled, her gaze glued to Sten’s face. “You’d both better come with me.” She spun toward the door.

“What do you mean, they’ve disappeared? How do two imprisoned dragons disappear?” Marli demanded, catching up to Kymri’s quick strides.

Kymri glanced over her shoulder at Sten as he followed them. She whispered to Marli, “How long has this been going on? You know what? Never mind, I don’t need to know. Not really, anyway.”

“Kymri, you’re not making sense. And…” It was Marli’s turn to glance over her shoulder at Sten, who simply kept walking as though he wasn’t rushing along right behind them. “It’s new.”

“Okay, well…” she left off as she pushed the elevator button, casting Sten another glance, as though he too might disappear.

The elevator doors swished open. Jori looked up, expression tight as he glanced between the women. When his gaze landed on Sten. “Good, you found him.”

Trepidation wormed through him.

Everyone stepped into the close space.

The hairs on Sten’s nape prickled.

Eamerson joined them two floors up. He also stared at Sten with concern as he stepped in with them.

“Why the fuck does everyone keep looking at me like I’ve sprouted a second head?”

No one answered, or looked at him again, until they all stepped off, seeming to ensure he was still with them.

Marli caught his eyes and gave a little shrug.

The growing knot in his gut eased when she slipped her fingers between his.

Elora and a cluster of male dragons waited in the council room. Turning away from the view through the great windows, Sten recognized them as some of the mountain deputies that helped keep things under control, two of which were currently serving as prison guards.

“News?” Jori directed his question at them.

“Searches are being conducted all throughout the mountain, but none of the internal security cameras have picked them up.”
