“We all appreciated it, Frederick,” Kymri said to Goliath.

His complexion gained a rosy hue.

The elevator doors swished open, drawing their attention to Stenlen striding toward them, eyes on Marli.

“She’s awake,” Goliath said.

“So I see.”

“I’ll let the others know she’ll live.”

Sten gave Goliath a nod as he left, without another word to Marli or Kymri.

“Hold the doors, Frederick,” Kymri called out. “We’ll just be gone a few days,” she said to Marli and Sten, then left them alone in the hall.

Kymri’s footsteps disappeared, the doors swished closed, and the only sounds were those of Sten and Marli’s breathing in the otherwise vacant hall.

She looked up into his taut face as he hovered over her.

“How do you feel?”

She gave a short laugh.

He nodded.

Her gaze swept his tense body, over his broad shoulders and arms held out as though ready for something.

“Thank you,” she met his eyes.

He sucked in a breath. “I’m sorry I didn’t stop them from hurting you.”

“You stopped them.”

His fingers twitched.

She reached for his hand, recalling the relief she’d felt when his dragon body had enveloped hers.

Never in her life would she have imagined a male protecting her like that. Nor could she have admitted to herself that she welcomed it.

His arms around her, protecting her when she was most vulnerable. His tender hands and gentle lips as he kissed her forehead, his fingers that fluttered over her face when he brought her injured body into her room.

She turned his hand over in hers, and her other hand caressed this palm, causing his fingers to curl over hers.

“I’m glad you’re okay.” His voice was tight.

“Me too,” she smiled.

The tension eased out of his shoulders.

She tugged his fingers as she backed into her room.

He stepped in, closing the door behind him with a soft click. His free hand slipped along her jaw and cheek.

She closed her eyes, pressing her face into the warmth of his palm with a sigh.

“Marli—” his lips remained parted, though no more words came. His eyes said it all.

For the second time, she blinked back tears. Closing them, she pressed her lips to his. She released his hand, entwining her arms around his neck.
