“You could have just told me that and waited upstairs.”

“Why shouldn’t I come down here for myself? The archives belong to the tribe.”

The librarian huffed and cleared his throat. His footfalls were a little heavier on the stone floor as he led Eamerson to the directed section of the archive.

Marli eased forward from the storeroom door. When the librarian’s back was turned, she exposed her location to Eamerson.

At his nod, she darted down the nearest dark aisle on silent feet toward the stairs. Easing up the steps, she peered over the tops of the tall shelves to confirm that Eamerson kept the librarian occupied so that his back was to Marli’s escape.

As soon as she reached the library’s main door, she slipped out and pressed her back to the wall, staring at Sten.

“The deputies didn’t find anything else on this floor… Marli? What happened?”

“This is so… complicated. The librarian is…” she sucked in a breath, trying to find the words, wide eyed.

“Is what?” Sten hissed.

“Complicated.”

“Huh?”

“The imposter, yes, but it’s…”

“Complicated.”

Marli nodded, handing Sten her phone so that he could see the photos.

He growled as he swiped through. “I’d say that’s complicated.”

“There’s more.”

Sten’s brows went up, prompting her to continue. “She… is a dragon… but not quite a dragon—I don’t think.”

“She?” Sten rubbed a thumb against his temple, closed his eyes, and shook his head.

“Yeah.”

They were silent until Eamerson emerged from the library with a cartload of boxes from the archive.

Noting their expressions, he said, “Council room?”

Sten nodded and hit the button for the elevator.

Chapter 24

Marli, Stenlen, Eamerson, Goliath, and several others stood inside the mountain’s interior runway hangar, waiting to greet their king and report on mountain events in his absence.

Jori and Kymri returned in the small plane, escorting a few guests. The plane transported the royal couple, Elora, Jonathan, and another familiar face.

Marli smiled at GPSA Agent Carson Perenga as he emerged from the plane. She was surprised and delighted to see the water dragon shifter again, after the night Jori and Kymri were abducted from Black River. She glanced around for Carson’s mate. “Lirikai isn’t with you?”

“She’s following a lead for another case we’re working on in the north. I have to join her as soon as the funeral is done here.”

“You’re here as a Global Paranormal Security Agency representative?”

Carson nodded, hitching a pack on his shoulder. “At Jori’s request. He insisted the agency have a presence here for this important event. My bosses agreed and thought I was a good choice.”

A large shadow blocked the sunlight as Odson’s massive dragon form glided in to land nearby. He shifted into his human form as Carson tossed a pack to him.
