“You should get that.”

I glance over at my friend with a look of shock. “What? Why?”

She shrugs, finding her size in a few breast-feeding nightgowns. “Logan would love it.”

I snort. “Logan? Why would I care what Logan thinks about this?” My heart beats a little faster at the mention of his name.

“Why wouldn’t you? You’re in love with him, aren’t you?”

My eyes widen as I look up at my friend. “I’m not—”

“Oh, stop. You can lie to yourself, but you can’t lie to me. I know you, Hallie, just as well as you know me. You fell in love with him and then ran scared.”

I replace the nightgown in my hand and cross my arms over my chest. “You’re wrong.”

The look on her face tells me she doesn’t believe me. “About which part? About falling in love with Logan or about running scared, because from where I stand, both are very much true.”

All I can do is narrow my eyes at her, wishing what she was saying weren’t true. But the fact remains: I both love him and ran from him as a result of it.

“I’ll take your silence as the answer to my question, but what I want to know is, why?” She steps forward and places her hand on my arm. “Hal, if you love him, why not stay?”

A lump forms in my throat and I have to fight to keep tears at bay. “Because he didn’t sign on for this.”

“For what?”

“Me.”

“You’re having his baby,” she reasons unnecessarily.

“Right,” I counter. “He’s here for the baby, not me.”

“Oh, Hal,” she replies, chuckling as she shakes her head. “You silly, silly girl. He’s in love with you too.”

This is the moment my jaw drops to the floor. “Excuse me?”

“A blind person could see it. He’s in love with you.”

“Uhh,” I start, clearing my throat. “How do you know?”

“Because I have eyes. And so does he. He watches you everywhere you go. When you guys were at football games, he would smile and watch you cheer instead of what’s happening on the field. Even back at your birthday party in July, I could see it. Hell, even before that, I’ve always wondered. You two would bicker like an old married couple, and not because you didn’t get along. It was foreplay, and now, it’s love.”

I don’t know when I started crying, but a few tears escape my eyes before I even realize what’s happening. “I didn’t mean to fall in love with him,” I whisper, saying those words aloud for the first time.

She gives me a sad smile. “I know. It always happens when you least expect it. It did for me with Gabe. I still fought my feelings and left, so I have a pretty good idea of what you’re thinking and how you feel. The problem is all the cards haven’t been laid on the table. You’ve only shown part of the hand, Hal.”

My throat is so dry, it’s hard to form words. “But…but what if he still says no?”

“Then at least you’d know how he feels. Right now, you’re assuming, and you remember what Mrs. Voight used to say in English class, right?”

I can’t help but roll my eyes. “Assume just stands for ass out of you and me.”

Blair snickers and nods. “Exactly. So stop being an ass, and tell him how you feel.”

“You’re bossy today,” I grumble, even though I know she’s right.

I’m just scared.

“How does it feel? You’re the one who’s usually Miss Bossy Pants,” she replies, winking before turning her attention back to a piece of black lingerie. “Do you think your brother would want to rip this off my body on our honeymoon?”
