She turns her eyes to me. “Yeah, I love it. I grew up in Virginia, but my parents brought my brother and I to Coney Island every summer. It’s so colorful and bright. It’s busy, but there’s an innocence about the place. A freedom to simply have fun.”

“Yeah?” I lean in closer. She’s adorable when she’s excited about something. “And what kinds of things do you do there?”

“There’s lots of shopping, carnival rides, places to walk, beaches…” She laughs.

I grin. “Perhaps a walk on the beach?”

Her innocent eyes look playfully into mine, and I see the confidence building in her expression again. A smirk grows on her face. “OK, I’ll play along. Do you like long walks on the beach?”

I bite back a laugh. Her shy advances are more than endearing. Slowly, I slide my hand down to the small of her back. “I do. Do you?”

She watches me for a moment, her gaze traveling down to my lips and then back up again. “…I wouldn’t say no.”

We lock eyes. Does she mean she wouldn’t say no to me? “You wouldn’t say no to a walk on the beach?”

She blinks and looks down at her drink with a grin. I wait patiently until she meets my gaze again.

“Right now?” She eyes me mischievously.

I shift my gaze over the railing, looking down at the crashing waves against the dark sand beneath us. “Well, it’s a little cold right now.” I look back at her. “But… maybe if we were at Coney Island on a warm sunny day instead, you’d say yes to me?

She pulls her bottom lip between her teeth, grinning coyly. “I just might…”

God, I want to suck on that lip. This is a silly game we’re playing. Her answers are so vague; so imprecise. She’s either too shy to be honest, or she’s using her elusiveness as a tool.

It’s working.

Our faces are closer now that my arm is wrapped around her back. There’s a rash of freckles across her nose and cheeks. She probably hates them, but they’re actually really sexy.

The moonlight reflects in her big, brown eyes and I smile as I admire her. “You know, you have the most beautiful eyes.”

She blushes again, blinking away from me. “Thanks.”

I don’t take my eyes off her. “Does that compliment embarrass you?”

She continues looking down at the railing. “It’s just…I don’t usually…” She takes a deep, almost frustrated breath. “It’s not something I’m used to hearing.”

I furrow my brow. “Well, you should be hearing it often.”

She peers up at me, and her expression holds some sort of timid confidence that I didn’t know was possible. “I know why you’ve said it though,” she says quietly.

I tilt my head in confusion. “Because it’s true?”

She blinks slowly and smiles. “Because if you buy a girl a drink and tell her she’s pretty, then she just might come home with you.”

I stare at her for a moment as a smirk forms on my face. I’ve underestimated her. She’s feistier than she seems. I raise my eyebrows playfully. “And is that such a bad thing?”

She continues to smile as she returns her focus to the water. “I’m still not sure yet.”

I lick my lips and turn to the waves as well, amused by her responses. “And is there anything that might make you sure?”

I can’t help but glance back at her, and I watch the wind blow the loose strands of her hair across her forehead as she contemplates a response. She’s tricky; giving me a challenge tonight, and I’m all the more interested in her for it.

“How often do you come to places like this?” she asks, avoiding my question and still not looking at me.

I clear my throat. “Well, evidently more often than you…” I observe her from the corner of my eye to see that she’s grinning. “But, not incredibly often. Especially not during a show run. I’m usually pretty busy.”

She looks down at her hands on the railing. “But when you do, you entice women by telling them they have beautiful eyes?”
