I swallow anxiously and take a bite of my own meal.

She clears her throat. “So, what were you looking to get from this chat?” She still isn’t looking at me.

I take a deep breath. “I had a lot of fun with you last night, Sophie. I don’t want to end things on such bad terms.”

She sighs and looks me in the eye. “Ok…so…what? You wanted to make sure you were in my good graces in case you show up in town again and I’ve changed my mind and want to go home with you for real?”

“Well… I uh…” I’m caught off guard by her question, because she pretty much hit the nail on the head.

“It’s not going to happen, Kai,” she replies strictly. “I’m sure there are plenty of women out there who will gladly sign their names on your long list of conquests, but it won’t be me.”

I furrow my brow. That comment stings a little. “How long do you think my list is?”

She blinks her big eyes at me, apology written in them. But she’s still defiant. “Too long for me.”

I don’t let any sort of emotion play on my face. My list is not that long. But it would probably seem that way to her.

She sets her fork down and digs her hand into her pocket, pulling out a ten-dollar bill and placing it on the table. “Look…” she begins. “I appreciate that you brought my coat back. Thank you for that. But otherwise, I don’t have much else to say.”

She’s so gentle, yet so sure of herself. I should be content to say goodbye. We clearly aren’t on the same page. But she’s somehow only drawing me in even further.

I smile softly at her, trying to lighten the moment. “You’re kind of fascinating, you know that?”

She raises an eyebrow. “And you’re a flirt.”

I shrug my shoulders and grin. “You’re the one who agreed to breakfast with me.”

She starts to stand up. “And I’m the one who’s going to leave now.”

“Wait, wait,” I say quickly, not wanting to give up on her yet.

She slowly and tentatively sits back down.

“I’m sorry,” I apologize. “I’ll be serious.”

She crosses her arms and stares at me in silence.

“Why are you angry with me?” I ask.

“Because you’re a flirt.”

I drop my shoulders in defeat. “But you didn’t think that was a bad thing last night, did you?”

She blinks at me without responding.

I inhale carefully. “Ok, so you’re not looking for anything casual.” I pause. “But, I really enjoyed talking with you then, and even today, right here.” I register her unsympathetic expression. “Do you think the next time I’m in town, maybe, we can just do breakfast again? If you give me your number I-”

“I don’t think that’s such a good idea,” she replies, standing up again.

“But, Sophie.” I sit forward in my chair and look up into her innocent eyes. “You did have a good time last night, right? …At the club at least?”

She gulps. There’s a hint of an agreement there. But her expression turns defiant again. She closes her eyes briefly. “Why, Kai? Why are you pushing this? Am I some sort of challenge? You think you’ll succeed if you finally break me?”

I raise an eyebrow in disgust. “Who do you think I am? I’m not trying to break you. It’s your choice. Your life. You can do with it what you please.”

“Then please, let me do exactly that,” she sighs, eyeing the elevator.

I glare mildly at her. “Fine.” She’s not going to give in. She’s not going to be honest. And I’m not going to push her any longer.
