Brent holds up his hands and backs up. “Ok I’m out, I have a girlfriend.”

Leah presses her lips together and looks back and forth between Nick and me. I hold my breath. She’s Sophie’s best friend. She probably knows Sophie has a thing for Nick, and I doubt she wants to disrespect her for that, so I brace myself to be chosen.

After a few more seconds of thought, Leah takes a deep breath and stands up. “Alright Nick. A short one.”

Nick touches his heart. “Oh wow, I’m flattered.”

She walks over to him and leans in to place the quickest kiss possible on his lips. But as she starts to back away, he grabs her arm for just a second and holds her to him longer than she intended.

She presses her hand against his shoulder to push him away, and then she takes her seat again. “I can’t believe I chose you after you just licked the floor.”

I watch her with interest, trying to understand why she kissed him instead of me. The reasoning should have pointed her otherwise.

“Thanks, sweetheart.” Nick winks at her.

Ignoring him, she spins the bottle and it lands on me.

I clench my teeth, wanting to be done with the game. “Uhhh…let’s see…let’s do a dare.”

Leah grins. “Call your ex.”

It’s my turn to freeze.

I only have one ex. And I’m NOT calling her. But realization quickly dawns on me, and I’m saved. “I deleted her number. I don’t have it anymore.”

“Then find her on Instagram and send her a message,” Leah instructs.

I don’t want to hate Leah, but she’s dropping on my list of favorite people at the moment. “Alright,” I sigh.

I pull out my phone and open the app. I already know she has an Instagram profile, and I know how to find it. I navigate to her page and take a deep breath before I tap the message button.

“What do I have to say?”

Leach scratches her chin. “I won’t be that mean. You can say what you want. But you have to show us proof that you actually did it.”

I stare daggers at Heather’s profile photo. She has her brown hair curled, vibrant red lipstick, and a bright, innocent smile.

She isn’t innocent, though.

Not even close.

I poise my fingers over the onscreen keyboard while everyone waits. I have no idea what to say. I don’t ever want to talk to her again.

I need to say something that doesn’t require a response, so I type ‘I hope you’re doing well.'

Do I really hope it? Eh. I mean, I don’t wish misery on her, but I wouldn’t mind if she eventually got a little taste of her own medicine.

I turn my screen to the group as I press send. Sophie is peering at it through a residual frown from earlier.

Nick is staring at her, licking his lips like he wants to devour her. He rests his arm across the back of the sofa, smugly taking another drink and shaking his head. “It all makes sense now.” He chuckles softly.

She looks out the window silently, sipping her beer.

I stare at him for a muted moment. His snarky comments may be welcome in a different setting, but he must see how uncomfortable he’s making her. It’s written all over her face. I wonder what could possess him to be so utterly disrespectful. I’d like to think it is the alcohol. But I know that isn’t the truth.

I reach forward and spin the bottle. It twists and turns for a few seconds until it points directly at Nick.

He blinks drunkenly at me and then grins. “Dare.”
