Page 143 of Love to Fear You

She also encouraged me to come clean to Prisha about what I wrote to her in my suicide note. However, I’m not sure when I’ll see her next, and I want her memories of me to be good ones.

So I ripped up the letter, but I memorized the important parts.

“Hey, Prish?”

“Yeah?”

“Before I go, I wanted to say thank you. For everything.”

She quirks her head. “What do you mean?”

“Just… thank you. You were my first and only real friend at school. You were there for me unconditionally, even when I didn’t deserve it or pushed you away. So, I want you to know how much I love and appreciate you.”

I chug the rest of my champagne. All this talk of feelings is awkward and weird.

When I set my glass down, Prisha looks at me with a trembling lip.

“I love you too.” She fans at her eyes to dry the tears. “Ugh, you’re going to make me ugly cry.”

“No, don’t cry!” I pull her in for another hug, both of us teary-eyed and giggly.

“Remember, we’re doing Sunday Night Book Club,” Prisha says.

“Of course. We have to keep up with the latest spicy romances.”

“I’ll video call you every week.”

“I’m counting on it.”

Someone places their hand on my waist. I turn around to a pair of icy blue eyes staring back at me from the most handsome, perfect face on this planet.

Alek.

“I thought I’d find you here,” he murmurs.

“Well, yeah, this is the best spot,” Prisha says. “The food is fresh from the kitchen and still warm.”

“Yeah, not picked over with everyone’s germy hands,” I add. Again, we both laugh, forcing me to clutch my side from too much giggling.

“I came to steal you,” Alek says. His fingers tighten on my waist, signaling his desire. He looks dashing in his all-black suit, which is tailored to every line of his body, his sling no longer holding his arm in place.

“Okay, let me say goodbye.” I turn to Prisha and wrap my arms around her shoulders. “I’ll talk to you Sunday. Love you.”

“Love you too, bestie.”

We separate, and I wave to Prisha as we part ways.

“You’ll see her again, malishka.“ His thumb comes up to brush a tear at the corner of my eye.

“I know. It’s just that goodbyes are so sad.”

“Then let me cheer you up.” He spins me into his chest before capturing my mouth.

I’m still not used to being so openly affectionate with him, but I love how he wants to show the world I belong to him. In some ways, it feels like a dream, except this dream is my reality.

And I am so goddamned happy it hurts. Hurts from laughing too much and from smiling until my cheeks are sore. I wouldn’t trade this for anything.

When Alek and I part, look over his shoulder to find Dmitry staring at us from across the room. He gives me a warm smile and a small wave before turning back to his group of friends.
