Page 66 of Love to Fear You

“Jesus, good morning to you, too.” I take my usual seat and load up my plate.

My father’s newspaper is folded and lying on the table, and Galina is nowhere to be found. The stern expression on his face has me confused.

“Do you have something you want to say?” I ask, raising an eyebrow at him.

He narrows his gaze at me. “Ivan is waiting. You have five minutes to eat before we leave.”

“We?”

He folds his arms. “Yes. We have a meeting with the headmaster today.”

Oh, fuck. I know what this is about, and I really don’t want to explain to my father why there’s a video of me posted on a porn site. It’s not exactly what I had in mind for father/daughter bonding time.

I pull my phone out and type a quick text to Alek.

ME

The headmaster called my dad in for a meeting. I’ll be late, but I’ll see you in class. xx

P.S. I’m not wearing any panties today. ;)

The text back from Alek comes almost instantly.

ALEK

Damn the headmaster for making me wait to see that pretty pussy.

When I giggle, my father clears his throat. I glance up to find him staring at me with a hard look, his jaw set. “You seem very relaxed for someone facing disciplinary action. You wouldn’t have any idea what this is about, would you?”

I panic. “Um, probably my grades? My economics teacher suggested I find a tutor.”

Shaking his head, he lets out a heavy sigh, but my answer seems to satisfy him for now.

When we finish breakfast, I follow my father to the door.

“Where’s your bookbag?” he asks.

“Oh, I, uh, forgot it at school yesterday.”

He closes his eyes for a moment and pinches the bridge of his nose. “How are you supposed to keep up with your schoolwork if you forget your textbooks at school?”

“It won’t happen again.”

“Good. It better not.”

The ride to school is tense. Ivan picks up on this and remains silent for the drive, and my father busies himself with work emails on his phone.

When the town car pulls off the main road through the front gate, I’m relieved to find no signs of protesters or police. However, the further the vehicle drives up the hill, the more dread tightens its grip on me.

This school is a cage, and I don’t want to be trapped inside with a bunch of vultures feeding on my humiliation.

I’m one of the first students to arrive, which provides some relief. Being marched through the school by my dad to the headmaster’s office would only fuel the rumors.

“I’ll wait here for you, Mr. Baker,” Ivan says.

“Thanks. Hopefully, this will be a short meeting.” My dad gives me a pointed look.

Mrs. Albrecht isn’t surprised when we walk into the office, and her severe expression makes me flinch.
