I laugh. “A little.”

“Like I said, malishka, I take your education seriously. Now, take a seat.”

I do as he says, and moments later, a butler arrives in the garden with a tray of snacks and a bottle of wine. He sets two glasses down and pours us each a drink, then leaves without a word.

“Why doesn’t your sister go to the academy with us?” I ask. “She’s old enough, isn’t she?”

Alek nods. “She’s fifteen, but she goes to an all-girls finishing school.”

“Oh, I see.”

Anastasia is a stunning girl, but if she’s anything like her brother, she’s also smart. It’s a shame their parents are giving her a lesser education compared to Alek. If she had a choice, I wonder what she’d choose for herself.

Examining the tray of snacks, I reach over to pick up what looks like a slice of bruschetta, but Alek slaps my hand away.

“What the hell?”

“If you pass the test, you can have a snack… among other rewards.”

“Let me guess, sex as a motivational tool?”

He grins. “Now you’re getting it.”

“And what happens if I fail?”

Alek pulls out a piece of paper and slaps it facedown on the table in front of me. He comes around to stand behind my chair, placing both hands on my shoulders, and when he leans down to whisper in my ear, I shudder.

“Then you’ll be punished.”

Standing back up, he circles the table and takes his seat while I’m left breathless and turned on.

“You have ten minutes to finish your test, starting now.”

“Wait! I don’t have a pencil.”

Alek checks his phone. “Nine minutes and fifty-seven seconds left.”

“Fuck you.”

My hand dives into the front pocket of my bookbag, and I fumble around until I find a pencil. With my heart racing in panic, I flip the test over and begin.
