Page 56 of A Taste of Darkness

A heavy warmth falls around me all at once, and suddenly the darkness outside is the least of my worries.

The last thing I see as I’m dragged out of the car is Jovich's shadowy grin. "Sorry kiddo." He says. "I can't have them find out who you are."

I blink and feel myself falling to the ground, but the same person who ripped me out of the car threads their arms under mine and drags me into the night.

The headlights disappear as Jovich tears out of there as fast as he came.

My eyes are too heavy to keep open, and as they close one final time, his words tease the back of my mind.

Can't have them find out who you are.

The cold and pain disappear, a headrush making me feel light as the world around me falls away. I’m confused, unable to hold onto a single thought, let alone the millions that seem to be flitting away from me just out of reach. But as my eyes close, one thought stays with me.

Who am I?

Chapter twenty-six

Remy

The rapid knocking on the door jars me from the fringe of sleep and I glance around my room, confused.

I don't remember my eyes closing.

"Remy!" Rhea yells my name from the other side of my door, punctuating it with the beating of her fists.

She’s pissed, and I’m in for it now. I glance at the tablet, where the screen is still open to Claire’s empty room. I guess she told her.

I drag myself to the door and throw it open to stare at her with my jaw set. I don't even have a chance to ask what the hell her problem is, because as soon as the barrier between us is gone, she braces her hands on my chest and shoves me so hard that I stumble backwards. Not because she’s strong, but because I certainly hadn't expected that.

"What the hell?" I growl.

"What the hell is exactly what I wanna know." She snaps. "What the hell did you do to my best friend?"

I sigh as the thought of Claire sends guilt and anger pulsing through me in tandem. I'd known Claire would tell her all about just how much snooping I'd done into her past, and I'd been prepared to stand my ground in the face of her anger. But now, I can't even defend myself against her fury, because she has every right to it.

"I crossed the line." I scrub my hands over my face. "I know she won't want to see me, so I was trying to give her some time before I apologize, but trust me. I know I'm an ass."

"Where is she?" Rhea demands. "Elaine said you guys went out on the boat and that was the last time she saw either one of you. Did you do something to her?"

I blink as I try to orient the pieces of what she’s saying into something that makes sense. "She didn't tell you?"

"Tell me what?"

I glance over her shoulder at the door to Claire's room. It’s firmly shut, no light leaking out from beneath it. "Tell me what, Remy?" When I meet her eyes, Rhea curses. "Damn it, Remy. Did you fuck her?"

"No." I answer honestly. But I can tell she isn't going to believe anything that comes out of my mouth, and truly, I can't blame her.

"I told her to stay away from you. And you knew how much she meant to me." She shakes her head, her eyes sparkling with tears. "You just treated her like some plaything and now she's gone." Her lip quivers as she considers her next words. "Fuck you, Remy."

She turns to go, but I can't let her leave. "Wait! What do you mean, 'she's gone'?"

"I mean, unless you're bluffing and you tossed her over the boat, I'm guessing that you've scared her off and drove her away."

"You checked her room?"

"Of course, I did." She snaps. "Her stuff is still here, but I know Claire. She left like she's not planning on coming back. So, thank you for that."

I glance out the window, at the oppressive blackness pressing in around the glass panes. "What time is it?"
