I raise my hands in surrender. “Consider it done. Now, are we through discussing underwear?”

She shrugs. “Guess so.” She pulls off her holey sock and throws it behind her, over the sofa. “There. It’s gone. It will never hurt your sensibilities again.”

Jesus, this woman makes me laugh. I love her.

I really do. And I think it’s time I tell her that.

I push a lock of hair hanging in her face behind an ear and hold her chin. “You know I love you, don’t you?”

She shimmies in her seat. “Yeah. I know.”

I burst out laughing. “Jesus. Is there anything you don’t have a sarcastic answer for?”

She shakes her headno.

“I may as well let you know that I don’t know what I’d do without you,” I add.

“I know.”

I flop back on the sofa and look up at the ceiling. “How did I end up with such a ball-buster? Will it always be like this?”

She climbs on top of me, straddling my lap. “Oh yes. This is just the beginning. And, by the way, I can’t live without you either.”

“So, you’re in love?”Gilly squeals.

Lucy looks at me skeptically.

“God, you guys. Don’t have to make a big deal about it. We’re twenty-seven freaking years old. We’re not in middle school anymore.”

They look at each other, eyebrows raised.

“Damn, she must really like him, because she’s trying to act all cool and shit,” Lucy says to Gilly, like I’m not even sitting right there.

“Did you tell him back?” Gilly demands.

“In so many words,” I reply. I look around the diner where we’re having lunch, sorry I ever brought it up. Where is our food?

Lucy smacks her hand on the table. “Get out. You didn’t say it back? That’s not how it works. When one person, man or woman, says it for the first time, you’re supposed to say it back. It’s in the relationship handbook.”

“Just because that’s how you do things doesn’t mean everyone else does,” I say defensively. “So, what’s up with the engagement party that turned into a wedding party, the one my mom’s holding?”

Gilly watches a hot guy come in and sit alone. She adjusts her blouse and shifts slightly, so he’s square in her line of sight.

“Jesus, Gill, are you in heat or something?” Lucy asks.

Gilly scrunches her face. “Hey, I can enjoy a handsome man when I see one.” She turns back to me. “Why are you asking me about your mom’s party? Why don’t you ask her?”

Lucy leans forward. “Oh, Gill, take a look at your guy.”

We both turn.

Well, shit.

A beautiful blonde has rushed in, all flustered and full of apologies.
