“I didn’t notice,” I said as I sat down on the chair opposite him. “It was only a blow job. Any warm, wet mouth will do. It doesn’t mean anything.”

I was still resisting the truth. Especially with Reed.

After almost two years of living in the same apartment, it wasn’t the first time he’d caught me with my dick down some guy’s throat. He knew I was gay. But I still couldn’t say the words.

But I did have a theory as to why I was holding out.

Even though we were both making movies, I’d received the bigger roles and the higher pay. I sure as shit knew it wasn’t because I was a better actor. I suspected that Reed’s openness about his sexuality had something to do with it. He’d even brought men as dates to cast parties and events.

While LA in general and the movie business in particular was full of queer rep, it still wasn’t the norm when you sat down in that movie theatre and stared up at the big screen.

Hetero relationships still ruled the box office.

Movie stars, too.

Unfair, but true.

And I wouldn’t be happy until I was one of them.

“Speaking of sucking, I had a shit morning,” Reed whispered as his luminous smile dimmed.

“What happened?”

“The assistant director, Donny Flood, wanted to hook up.”

“Are you shitting me?”

Reed shook his head.

“He’s like, sixty years old,” I scoffed. “You’re so far out of his league it’s laughable.”

Reed sighed. “Well, he didn’t find it funny when I turned him down.”

“I met him at a junket last month. With his wife. She’s a horrible actress… Tina, Tara… I can’t remember.”

Fuck, I was terrible with names. Ironic, giving my ability to memorize lines and lines of dialogue.

“So what happened?” I asked.

“I politely turned him down. An hour later, I was informed that I was re-cast in a non-speaking role. When I confronted him about it, he said it was due to ‘artistic refinement’. What a line of bullshit. Fucking prick. You know, sometimes, I really hate this town.”

“He can’t do that to you! Did you tell Henn?”

Reed scoffed. “Of course, I did. I called her right away. But there’s nothing she can do. It’s his word against mine. And decisions to re-cast are done all the time. It’s not unusual.”

I got up and began to pace. I was so angry at that asshole for punishing Reed.

It served as another reminder of the predatory nature of our industry.

So why then, did so many of us stay? The lure of money and fame is just too tempting to pass up. Not just that, but the whole culture of the business rewarded your ego. The chance at being immortalized on film fed into the basic human desire to cheat death.

“I have an idea.”

Reed looked at me with a furrowed brow. “You’re not going to slash his tires or anything like that are you?”

“What? No.” I playfully smacked his shoulder. “There might be an opening here.”

“What? How?”
