So, while I didn’t have my agent in my back pocket, I called Reed’s therapist and set up an appointment. Then I talked to Henn and told her everything. Well, the shortened version.

A knock at the door a half hour later filled me with both dread and relief.

It was my dealer.

Except, when I glanced at my security camera, it wasn’t.

It was Reed.

Even disguised in a baseball cap, sunglasses, and a fake mustache, I could tell it was him. I’d know that long, lithe body anywhere.

Despite feeling like death, I practically ran to the door.

When I opened it, Reed said nothing. He pushed past me and stalked into my home.

I slammed and locked the door and leaned back against it, completely out of breath.

“Jesus, Tate,” he exclaimed as he threw off his hat and sunglasses. “Jesus, you look?—"

For the first time ever, he walked right up to me and cupped my face in his hands. All I could do was stare into those electric eyes of his. I’d never seen anyone look at me with such concern. And for once, I didn’t flinch or pull away.

“What’s with the attempt at a disguise?” I asked. “Not that I didn’t know it was you right away.”

“In case of the paps. Or your fucking agent.”

“Thanks, but you didn’t need to do that.”

I shook my head.

Reed suddenly let go of me and I nearly slid down the door. My knees and every other part of me was shaking.

“I’ve been such an asshole to you,” I admitted.

Reed nodded. “You have.”

“So, why are you here?”

Reed sighed and yanked off his fake mustache. “You’re not the only one who can’t say no.”

“What does that mean?”

Reed ran a hand through his blond hair. “It means I’m your friend. For better or worse.”

I snorted. “I thought that was marriage.”

“That’s any relationship worth holding on to. And I know that despite your douchebag behavior, you’re still the man I met four years ago. You may act like an ass, but it’s your defense shield. We both know that there’s much more to you than meets the eye.”

“I’m so fucked up, Ree.”

The words were barely a whisper.

“Hey.” He stepped back up to me and gripped my shoulders. “Everyone is fucked up.”

“Not like me.”

“You’ve endured a lot.”

I stiffened. “What are you talking about?”
