I lit up inside with immense pleasure. And relief. I wanted Tate to have a space that he wanted to be in. A refuge from the chaos of Hollywood life.

“I’m glad. I was going to buy you a cat but then I thought, that has to be something you pick out yourself.”

“A cat, eh?”

“They’re good company.”

“And that’s why you have so many?” Tate chuckled.

“Smart ass.” I gave him a choice finger. “I can’t choose, you know that. If I could, I’d adopt all of them.”

“Why don’t we go together, next week, and each pick out a cat? Then we can split pet parent duties when one of us is out of town.”

I was stunned by his suggestion. “That’s a big commitment.”

“I know. I’d only do this with you.”

I stopped short and stared at him. Did he even realize what he’d just said?

“Unless, of course, you don’t want to,” Tate backtracked. “It was just an idea. I mean, with your work schedule and your dating life, you probably don’t have time for a pet.”

I wandered over to his kitchen and opened the fridge, pulling out a bottle of sparkling water. I selected two glasses from the cupboard and placed them on the counter.

“I have time. And my personal life has been quiet.”

“No special man in your life?” Tate asked. “I mean, besides me.”

I knew Tate was joking but it still made my chest ache.

“Nope. I’m all about a fun, casual time.”

“You want more, you’re just afraid.”

“Me?”

“Yes, you. You want it all. But in this town, it’s hard to find someone real.”

I poured two glasses and passed one to Tate. “Truth? I’ve only been in love once. He didn’t return my feelings and so, it kind of put me off romance for good.”

“You never told me that. Who is this mysterious guy? Have I met him? Worked with him?”

Oh, you’ve met him, Tate.

“Yes, but I’m not telling you. It serves no purpose.”

“Well, whoever he is, he’s a fool,” Tate declared.

“No, he’s not. And I don’t regret my feelings. Falling in love is never a mistake.”

Tate scoffed. “Like I would know.”

“Never?”

Tate hesitated for a split second.

“Never.”

“Now that you’re sober, maybe things will change.”
