Celia and Jules stepped on either side of us and the four of us posed altogether. Then it was me and Celia, and Reed with Jules. There were the usual questions about our dates for the night. I forced back an eye roll but just barely.

Once our bit was done, Henn ushered us inside.

“Great job, you two. You had the press begging for more,” Henn gushed. “Let’s ensure we also take some photo ops when we leave tonight. Keep the buzz going.”

“I need to speak with Tate for a moment. Business,” Reed interrupted. “Will you all excuse us?”

Before I could say anything, Reed was pushing me through the venue, down the hallway towards the bathrooms.

“What’s wrong? Did I say something to the press I shouldn’t have?” I asked.

He pulled me around the corner into a dark alcove.

“What was all that?” Reed hissed.

“All what? I smiled and did what I was told to do,” I snapped. “It’s called promo and it’s part of our job.”

Reed ran an agitated hand through his hair. “What’s with the… you know… touching me when we’re on the carpet?”

“You mean, the back thing?”

“Yes. And when I was about to step out of the limo.”

“I was just being supportive. What’s with you tonight?”

Reed scoffed. “I could ask you the same thing.”

I stepped closer to him. “What did I do wrong?”

“Nothing. You did nothing wrong,” Reed sighed and stepped back. “I’m just nervous. Sorry.”

“About what? What’s going on?”

“Jules, he—“ Reed bit his lip. “Jules asked me to move in with him.”

I swore my heart stopped beating. All the air was sucked out of my lungs.

“Is that—” I coughed, clearing my throat. “Is that what you want?”

“I thought so,” Reed shrugged. “Maybe? I don’t know.”

“Why are you hesitating?”

“I don’t love him. Not like?—”

Reed paused and stared up at me.

He couldn’t mean…

I watched his throat move as he swallowed.

I locked on his perfect pink lips and all kinds of dirty thoughts about my best friend flooded my mind.

Suddenly, his mouth was the only thing I wanted.

Cupping his face, I leaned in, our noses touching, our lips sharing the same breath.

“Don’t,” Reed warned. “I’m not one of your secret fuckboys. You can’t do this to me.”
