“Yes! This is fucking it! I can feel it, Ree. This is the one!”

I launched off the sofa and reached over to hug him. For once, Tate didn’t tense.

In fact, he squeezed me so tight I was sure my ribs were going to bust.

“I’m so happy for you!” I exclaimed when I finally leaned back.

“I’m still in shock. I just got off the phone with Henn. She was so excited.”

Henny Pritchard was his agent and one hardworking bitch. I say that in all respect because being a bitch in this town is a necessity. She pushed for the clients she believed in. Tate was one of them.

My agent, a guy named Rik Grouse, was not the same. He’d been great in the beginning. But the number of new auditions he had in mind for movie roles was dwindling with each passing month, and I knew that something had to change.

“When do you get called in?” I asked, as I quickly stepped back.

Tate licked his lips, and I forced my eyes up to his. “Next Tuesday. You gonna help me rehearse?”

“Of course. But the same goes. When you’re a big star on that movie set, you better invite me to visit,” I teased.

Tate shook his head. “Better yet, as soon as I have the offer, I’ll put a good word in with the producer.”

“Confidence, I love it! Fuck, I’m so happy for you.”

“Thanks. You feel like going out for a bite? My treat.”

I grabbed my phone on the coffee table. “You’re on.”

“How about you? Any news?”

“Yeah, but I don’t want to spoil yours. It can wait.”

Tate glared at me, his eyes darkening. “Spit it out, Ree. Come on.”

“I have an audition on Monday for a supporting role in Just Like You.”

“The romcom?”

“Yeah. At first Rik wasn’t sure about it. I had to push him. Hard. The movie auditions are getting fewer and fewer.”

“Why wouldn’t he jump on it?”

“I don’t fucking know. TV, no problem, but he knows what my goal is. Now I’m starting to think he doesn’t believe in me like he used to. Or maybe he sees a problem I don’t. Christ, is it possible I’m just not meant for the bigger roles?”

The glass was half-empty for a change.

“Bullshit,” Tate snapped and pointed a finger at me. “And don’t ever repeat that. If you think that way, you’re defeating yourself. You know you have what it takes. Maybe it’s time to find an agent who feels the same way.”

“You’re right.” I nodded, taking a deep breath. “But patience for shit like this is never my strong suit.”

“That’s ‘cause you’re the golden boy.”

“Excuse me?”

“You’ve probably had people falling all over you since forever. Telling you you’re beautiful and let’s face it, when you look like you do, doors open. You don’t need to bust them down like the rest of us.”

I crossed my arms, my temper igniting. “Doors have not opened. And I work my ass off!”

“I didn’t say you didn’t. But I think you came to LA under the assumption that you were gonna make it fast. But the reality is, if you’re not related to anyone famous, it ain’t happening overnight. Even for someone as pretty and talented as you.”
