“There’s nothing for you to be sorry about, Ree. But it’s something you need to consider.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m an addict. I’ll always deal with this. For the rest of my life. It’s not going away.”

“I’m the same. Our situation’s no different.”

“Bad enough for one of us, but both?” I sighed and stepped closer. “See, this is the type of thing I never think about, because I’ve never had anyone else to consider. But now… I don’t want to hurt you.”

“It’s too late.”

“What?”

“We’ve already hurt each other throughout the years. Plenty of times. Especially after our big blow out, when I walked away. But we’re here now. Older, stronger, and smarter. Please, fuck, let us be smarter.”

I chuckled and pulled him into my arms.

“What I’m trying to say is, we’re honest with each other in all things now,” Reed added. “No more hiding, no more secrets.”

There were still a few.

“Like what I said to make you walk out on me that day?”

“You still don’t remember?”

I shook my head. “No.”

Reed sighed. “You said that I was living in denial about my feelings for you. But it wasn’t just the words, it was how you said it. You taunted me, like you found the whole thing amusing, and that really fucking hurt.”

I stared at him, and seeing the pain in his eyes made my chest hurt.

“I’m so sorry I did that. I… I guess it was easier for me to hurt you than to face my own feelings. Do you forgive me?”

Reed nodded. “You were right about my denial, though. But I was too angry and hurt, and you were too high to make sense of what was going on to do anything about it.”

“And now?”

“Now it’s different,” Reed looked around, and then back up at me. “We’ll probably stumble around in the dark at times, but that’s okay. We’re not perfect. Our story doesn’t end when the credits roll.”

“I’m gonna fuck up.”

“I will too. And then we’ll figure out how to make it right.”

Reed squeezed my waist.

“Come, let’s get going,” Reed smiled at me. “We have a damage deposit to add to.”

I wanted to attack Tate the moment we stepped foot in the door, but then I remembered the call with his sponsor.

That came first.

I headed upstairs to have a bath while Tate made his call.

When I walked out of the bathroom a half hour later, Tate was already lying in bed, on his laptop, wearing… reading glasses?

“When did you get those?” I pointed to his face.
