“Necessary? I’m not sure what you—”

“Well, it’s like this: Samuel is a mechanic—can fix any engine—and Caleb is a builder by trade. Their eldest brother, Ezekiel, is a physician. We’ll be able to use them. The world will need them.”

“But they won’t need Mac?” Theo asked, confused.

“He doesn’t really do anything of use, does he? Nothing that will feed or shelter or defend his family.” Nancy sighed. “Cormac makes a lot of money, but there’ll come a time when money won’t mean anything.”

“It won’t?”

“Of course not! We’ll be too busy finding food and water and defending our homes—”

“Right, the pickups are loaded.” Mac walked into the kitchen. His tie was in his pocket and his sleeves rolled to the elbow. He was smiling, relaxed. “Sam says he’s ready to go.”

Nancy dismissed the notion with a flick of her hand. “We can’t leave before dark in broad view of anybody watching.”

“Of course—it’s much less suspicious to have a convoy of pickups leave my house in the middle of the night.”

“Don’t be ridiculous, darling; we won’t leave together.” Nancy rinsed out the sponge she’d been using. “In the meantime, I’ll sort out these cupboards. How on earth to do you find anything at all?”

“Mom—”

Caleb lugged in a large box of produce and a substantial joint of meat. “Where do you want this?”

“Just put it on the table,” Nancy directed. “I’ll need to sort out this kitchen before I start cooking.”

“Cooking?” Mac asked. “Why are you—”

“Ezekiel will be here soon.”

“Why is Zeke coming here?”

“Ezekiel is your brother, Cormac. I would have hoped he’d be welcome in your house.”

“He is—of course he is.” Mac’s voice was even. “I just want to know why the entire clan is descending on me today.”

“I just thought it was time we sat down to a family dinner…and since it’s almost impossible to get you out to the farm these days…”

“Mom, Theo is—”

“Delighted to meet you,” Theo interrupted. She turned to Mac, trying to let him know she understood. Her mother, too, was unstoppable. “Gus and I could go out to dinner, so you could all—”

Mac shook his head. “You’ve just gotten out of the hospital—”

“Hospital!” Nancy removed her rubber gloves. “Oh, honey, what are you doing washing dishes? Cormac, what could you be thinking? Sit down, sweetie, sit down!” She bossed and bustled Theo to a chair. “I’m going to put on a pot of my chicken dumpling soup, and then you can tell me all about it.”
