“Do you think we made a baby?” Amalie murmurs sleepily. “We haven’t exactly been careful.”

Understatement of the century. I’ve taken her bare every time we’ve been intimate.

I slide my hand down to cup her stomach. “God, I hope so.” I smirk. “But if not, I’m more than happy to keep practicing. I can’t wait to see you round with our child. I can’t keep my hands off you now, so God alone knows what I’ll be like when you’re pregnant.”

“A little person, created from parts of you and me.” She sighs as if it’s her greatest dream. “I hope we do a better job than our parents.”

Placing my finger under her chin, I tip her face up to mine. “With you as their mom? No doubt about it.”

“You need to include yourself in that, Deputy. You’re already an amazing husband, and you’ll be an equally amazing dad. We can give them all the things we never had. Security, safety. Love.”

“There’ll be no shortage of that,” I promise as she snuggles into me.

Amalie’s breathing evens out as she falls asleep. I hold her a little bit tighter, reminding myself how close I came to losing her.

Amalie is my light. She’s the blood that beats in my veins and the other half of my soul.

Like any couple, we’ll have our ups and downs, but we’ll support each other through the downs and celebrate the ups.

Our whole future lies ahead of us, and I can’t wait to share it with my little runaway.
