“Yep.”

“Are you actually going to introduce me to them or keep me a secret?” I challenged because my head was swimming with everything he’d shared.

“I wasn’t keeping you a secret. I just… I was being selfish.” His hand moved to cup the side of my face, and I couldn’t stop myself from leaning into his touch.

I was either an idiot or about to take the biggest risk of my life by gambling everything I had, including my heart, on the man in front of me.

March

Whether she knew it or not, Sunny leaned into my touch. The small gesture fed my soul the hope it needed. Maybe, just maybe, I hadn’t fucked everything into oblivion. Maybe I still had a chance at the future we were building.

So, I had to do something I’d never done. I let go of my control and let my heart speak for me. “I wasn’t keeping you a secret, sunshine. I was being selfish.”

“How?” Her brown eyes locked with mine, and a small part of me relaxed. She was asking questions and not pushing me away. The fact she was looking at me alone fueled something inside of me.

“I wanted more time. Just the two of us.” My voice sounded thick in my ears, and I cleared my throat. “My family is huge and loud. You have no idea how nosy they can be. There are so many of them, and they’re always around. The moment they found out about you was going to be chaos and…”

“And what?” she asked.

“And I am so head over heels in love with you I wanted more time. But the more time I got alone with you, the less I wanted to share you.”

“March.” She rolled her eyes. “This isn’t time for lines and?—"

“It’s not a line. I love you, Sunny.” My voice sounded hoarse in my ears, but I didn’t stop. It felt like I’d broken through something inside me, and the damn of feelings was flowing freely. “I fell in love with you before I knew your name. I saw you across the airport putting your jacket on and"—I lifted her hand to rest it right above my heart— “and it was like a shot to the heart, sunshine. I love you. I have no idea what I did in this life or a past one to luck out finding you the way I did, but I swear, honey, I was never hiding you. I was never keeping you a secret. I just… I wasn’t ready to share you with everyone.”

“You love me?” I couldn’t read the way she looked at me. I nodded because inside, I was man enough to admit I was terrified. Scared out of my mind I’d just put the final nail in the coffin and had pushed her away completely.

“I love you, too, March,” she whispered. “I want this to work. I want a forever.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“I do, too,” I rasped.

“But I need you to talk to me. Communicate. I can’t read your mind any more than you can read mine,” she gently pointed out. I knew she was right. I had a feeling that was something I was happily going to get used to.

“I will. I promise.” I leaned in forward. “Please come home,” I begged.

I didn’t care if anyone in town was watching this whole thing unfold or listening to me plead with my wife to return. I’d do anything. Move heaven and earth for her if I needed to. I just needed one last chance and some time to prove she could always, no matter what, rely on me.

“March.” I could see the battle in her eyes.

“Please,” I asked again, and I must have said the right thing because my beautiful wife nodded with a pretty smile while tears rolled down her delicate face. I wiped them away and hugged her tight to me as I whispered sweet nothings into her ear. I pulled back and wiped away the tears before I extended my hand for her. “Ready to go home?”

“Yes.” She took it, and we stood up together. I couldn’t help myself and pulled her into me one more time for a long embrace, and she held on just as tightly. We’d had our first fight and survived it.

“I promise I will give you a good life, Sunny,” I vowed atop her head before pressing my lips to her hair before pulling away.

“I love you, March.” I leaned in for a gentle kiss, and before I knew it, I was breathless and panting, wishing we weren’t in the middle of Main Street in front of the coffee shop.

“I won’t make you regret giving me a second chance,” I promised, and she sniffled. Her hand rose to touch my face, and my eyes shut.

“You better not,” she whispered with a wink, and we started to laugh. That was my girl. Sassy and not afraid to call me out on my shit.

I knew the courage it took for her to take this kind of risk on me after I hurt her, but I would spend my life making sure she’d chosen right. Because I belonged next to her, and she belonged with me.

Today, tomorrow, and always.

Sunny

“You can wait outside, March.” I watched the older gentleman point toward the office door. My cowboy’s brow bunched, and I knew he was going to argue with the lawyer who had wanted to see me.
