“No, not then. And sorry for dumping all that on you like that yesterday. It’s a long, sad story for another day. Today, you get the short, happy version. After all that happened”—he waved his hand around—“two men, who’re like the very best fathers ever, adopted me. Seriously, I know I’m biased, but they are the best. And my grandparents are my pops’ parents. They’re also the best.”

That was definitely the short version of the story, and I looked forward to hearing the long version some day, but I could understand why he wouldn’t want to tell me yet. So I just let it go. “Gotcha, and that sucks, but I’m also really glad everything turned out okay.”

As we approached the theater, the conversation turned to what movie to see. We opted for a comedy, and that had been fun. Hearing him laugh was so much better than seeing him sad like yesterday, and I decided right then and there that I wanted to do everything I could to make sure more of his days were like today and fewer like yesterday.

Afterwards, we decided on Chinese food because he said it was his favorite. The restaurant was in a strip mall next to a bookstore. When Spencer practically squealed from being so excited, it turned into an impromptu shopping trip.

“I had no idea this was over here. I always drive all the way into Vesper. If I’d known there was a bookstore this close, I’d be coming over here every weekend.”

I’d promised to get him home in time for him to get his chores done, but I hadn’t planned on spending two hours following him around looking at books, not that I was complaining. It had been a fantastic day. As it turned out, he loved books, and I got a crash course on the difference between fantasy and high fantasy and why one was better than the other.

The conversation had been easy on the way back to River Gorge, and I hated for the day to end, but I wanted to take this thing with him slow because I really wanted it to work. Like I’d told him, I’d never had a boy before, I’d played with plenty, but that didn’t make them mine, and that was what I was going for here. I still had a lot to work out. I might not be at a place in my life yet where I could offer a boy safety and security, but I damn sure could make sure he felt cherished and knew he was important to me.

I pulled up behind his apartment but left my truck running. He turned in the seat to look at me.

“Do you want to come up?”

“Not today, cutie. I said I’d get you home in time to get your chores done, if you remember, and I’m already pushing it to make good on that promise.”

“If you’re sure.” His face fell, and it was easy to see he took that as a rejection.

“I’m sure, but I would like to go ahead and set up our first date while I have you here.”

“Our first date? I thought today was our first date.”

“No, today was fun, but when I really take you on a date, you’ll see the difference. Are you free this upcoming weekend?”

He gave me one of those smiles that lit up his whole face and made my chest flutter. Fuck, this boy was going to have me wrapped around his little finger if I didn’t watch out. “I’m off all weekend. What do you have in mind?”

“You’ll have to wait until next Saturday to find out. Now slide over here and give me a goodbye kiss.”

He mock-gasped and clutched at a pair of invisible pearls. “My good man, just what kind of boy do you think I am? Asking for a kiss before you even take me on a first date.”

I chuckled and shook my head. “Okay, let’s just say today was a date. Does that mean I get a kiss?”

“Oh, absolutely.” He slid over next to me, and I’d never been so grateful for my truck’s bench seat in my life.

I wrapped my arms around him and pulled him in close. “I’ve been wanting to do this since the first time I laid eyes on you, cutie.”

He leaned forward, closing the distance between us. Our lips met with what I’d intended to be a sweet first kiss, but then the little minx brushed his tongue across my lower lip, and the kiss went from sweet to something much more dangerous really fast. I pulled him closer to me with one arm, sliding the other up his back to his head, and wrapped my fingers in those curls I’d been dying to touch for weeks.

I opened for him, and his tongue swept inside my mouth as his body melted against mine. He moaned against my mouth as I deepened the kiss, taking this to a place we weren’t ready to go yet, but I was helpless to stop. He tasted so damn good, and his body fit so perfectly pressed to mine. The kiss seemed to go on forever, both of us taking what we wanted as our tongues tangled and explored. Finally, I pulled back, drawing in a deep breath.

He looked up at me, pupils blown and lips swollen from our kisses, and I knew if I didn’t leave now, I wouldn’t go until I had him stripped naked and needy beneath me. “Fuck, cutie, you don’t make it easy for a man to take things slow.”

“Slow is highly overrated,” he said with a grin.

“Maybe so, but I think anything beyond that kiss is firmly in second-date territory.”

He let out a playful huff. “If you say so.”

“I do indeed say so. I’ll wait here until you’re inside. Be sure and lock the door.”

“Fine.” He leaned forward and stole a quick, much sweeter kiss and then opened the door. “Thanks for today, Nash. It was fun.”

I sat there and watched while he ran up the stairs and used his keys to let himself inside. He turned back and waved at me before closing the door behind him. I waited until the light came on before backing out of the parking spot and starting the drive home.
