I pulled open my closet and looked in to see what my options were.

“A button-up shirt, maybe my dark green one, and a pair of black jeans.”

“That sounds good, but don’t wear the green shirt. It looks nice, but go with that deep purple one that your grandmother gave you for Christmas last year. That one makes your eyes pop.”

I pulled the purple shirt out of the closet and held it up in front of me, looking in the mirror, and nodded my head. “Okay, that’s perfect. Thanks, Dad.”

“Anytime, kiddo. Now, did you say this guy works on a ranch?”

“Yeah, the one here in River Gorge that has the equine rescue I’ve told you about. He works with the rescued horses.”

“Oh man, your pops is gonna love him, and your Aunt Meg, as well.”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself, Dad. It’s one date, not a marriage proposal.”

“I know, but there’s just something about those cowboys.”

I chuckled. My dad had grown up in the city, and we all liked to tease him about how it took a cowboy to finally wrangle him.

“Well, you’d know, wouldn’t you?”

“That I would. Give me a call and let me know how it goes.”

“I will, Dad. Tell Pops I love him.”

We hung up the phone, and I smiled. I loved both my dads, but they were very different men. My dad was the one I called for serious advice because he was the more logical and steady of the two of them. My pops was the one I called for everything else. He was a bit of a maverick and a lot of fun. As my pops liked to say, he fell for my dad first, but my dad fell for him even harder. I wasn’t around for that whole thing, so I didn’t know if he was right about that, but what I did know was that they were relationship goals all day long.

I took my time getting ready for our date because I wanted to look my best. I wasn’t a big makeup guy, but my uncle, Nathan, had spent hours teaching me how to put on just enough to accentuate my features without looking made up, and tonight, I’d taken the time to put those skills to use. By the time I was done, I thought I looked good. I just hoped Nash agreed.

He was picking me up at six, but I was ready by five-thirty, which gave me thirty minutes to second-guess every single decision I’d made tonight. Were these the right clothes? Should I wash my face? Should I have gone with the cowboy boots instead of the plain-toe dress boots? I flopped down on the couch and made myself breathe. I didn’t need to be so nervous. Nash had already seen me in club clothes, and he’d seen me in sweats, and he seemed to like me just fine both ways. It would be fine. At least I kept telling myself that over and over until I heard a knock on the door.

I hopped up and went to the door, jerking it open, and hot damn, there was a mighty fine cowboy standing on my porch. He was wearing a dark brown button-up shirt, a pair of black pants, and of course, his brown Stetson hat.

“Damn, cutie, you look good enough to eat.”

My cheeks flushed, and I knew I was blushing like a silly kid. I inhaled and forced myself to make eye contact. “Thanks. You look good, too.”

He held out his hand, and when I took it, he pulled me to him. Then he brushed his lips lightly across mine. “Are you ready to go?”

“I am.”

“Okay then, let’s get going.”

Chapter 10

Nash

We made our way down the steps, but instead of going toward the truck, I turned to the right and pulled him with me.

“Where are we going?” he asked.

“It's a nice night, so I thought we would just walk from here.”

Spencer shot me a puzzled look. No doubt he was running all the possibilities through his head, trying to think of a place we could be going right here in River Gorge. I only hoped I’d gotten it right.

I'd spent most of the week thinking of options for tonight's date. I wanted it to be something special—memorable even. There were a ton of nice restaurants in the city that we could’ve gone to, and after, we could’ve gone to a movie or caught a play. Spencer struck me as the kind of guy who would enjoy a live show.

But then Donovan had come by the ranch on Thursday morning and mentioned that he was going to have a booth at an event they were having down on Artist Row tonight. This was going to be the first one, but if it went well, they wanted to make it a monthly thing. As soon as he started talking about what all they were planning, I knew that was just the place to take Spencer.
