A few minutes later, he came back with two bowls of soup and crackers. He’d grabbed a beer for himself, but for me, he’d filled a tumbler with some flavored water. He set everything down on the coffee table in front of me.

“Do you need anything else?”

“No, right this minute, I have everything I need,” I answered honestly because, seriously, what else was there?

Chapter 14

Spencer

I woke up the next morning, and I didn’t necessarily feel good, but I didn’t feel like death, which was an improvement over the day before. I wasn’t sure if Nash was still there. After all, he probably had to go to work. I guess I should’ve asked him about that before we went to sleep last night. I really hadn’t expected him to stay the night, but he insisted he wouldn’t be able to sleep with no one here to look after me.

On the one hand, I felt ridiculous when I thought about Nash taking care of me last night. I mean, the man had waited on me hand and foot, for heaven’s sakes. However, I would be lying if I said I hadn’t loved every minute of it. My dad and pops were great fathers, but they weren’t the type to baby and coddle. But apparently, Nash was.

I sat up, swung my feet over the edge of the bed, and let out a groan. Maybe I’d overestimated how much better I felt. After taking a deep breath, I stood up and was about to head to the kitchen when Nash opened the door. I swear the man must have superhuman hearing or something. I’d barely even made a sound.

“What are you doing up, cutie?”

“What time is it?”

“It’s about ten-thirty.”

“Wow, I don’t ever sleep in like that anymore.”

“Well, I’m guessing your body needed it. Probably still does.”

“Well, I mean, I admit I’m not about to go run a marathon or anything. But I do feel better than I did yesterday.”

“Yeah, but better than yesterday doesn’t really say much, does it?”

“I guess not.”

He strode over to where I stood and placed the back of his hand against my forehead. “You’re not burning up anyway. That’s an improvement.”

I reached up and grabbed his wrist, pulling his hand down. “You really shouldn’t have come, you know. You’ll probably get sick now.”

“I may, but if I do, it’ll be worth it for a chance to look out for you.”

“That’s just silly. I could’ve taken care of myself.”

“You could have, no doubt. But can do doesn’t mean have to. You’re not here by yourself anymore, Spencer. And I enjoy taking care of you.”

“Well, thank you. It was nice.” My cheeks heated, and not from fever this time. “But didn’t you need to be at work today?”

Nash loved his job on the Double C. Especially working on the horse rescue, so the last thing I wanted was for him to get in trouble at work.

“Nah, I let Murphy know you had that mess that was going around, and she told me to come and take care of you, and that’s what I intend to do, so you just get your derriere back in that bed, cutie, and I’ll bring you something to eat.”

“And coffee? Please tell me you made coffee.”

“No, there’s no coffee. You need to focus on things right now that will hydrate you, not things that are dehydrating.”

“But how am I supposed to start my day without coffee?” I whined.

“Well, you’re not starting your day. All you’re doing is having a little snack and then going back to sleep, so there’s no need to worry about coffee.”

“Fine,” I huffed. “But I need to go to the bathroom first.”

“You go right ahead. I’m gonna run and get you some food, but when I come back in here, I expect to find you right back in the bed where you belong.”
