“I’m proud of you, too, son. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family. Now, who’s this handsome young man?” he added, turning his attention to Spencer.

“This is Spencer. My boyfriend.”

My dad extended his hand, shaking Spencer’s. “Nice to meet you, Spencer. Thanks for being here to share this moment with us.”

“Thanks for having me.”

Keith walked up beside us, pulling me into a bear hug. Not a lot of men were big enough to engulf me like that, but Keith was.

“It’s good to see you, brother. And this must be Spencer.”

Spencer’s cheeks flushed, but he nodded and let Keith pull him into a hug, as well.

“Y’all are headed over to Farolitos, aren’t you?” Dad asked.

“We are.”

“Good,” my dad said. “I’ve been craving their sopapillas for days.”

Spencer

It was a short drive to the Mexican restaurant that Nash’s father had chosen for lunch. I could tell as soon as we pulled in the food was going to be excellent. It was a smaller place that wasn’t anything fancy at all, and those were always where you got the best Mexican food.

Once he’d parked, he turned to look at me. “Are you ready for this? My family’s awesome, but they can be a bit overwhelming.”

“You survived my family, so I’m sure I’ll survive yours. Besides, they seemed really nice at the ceremony.”

“They’re nice. They’re just really excited to meet you. You’ll be the first guy I’ve ever brought to meet them, and my mom is over the moon.”

Pressure much? “Hopefully she won’t be disappointed.”

“She’s going to love you, trust me. Now, are you ready?”

I nodded. “Let’s do this thing.”

As we walked up to the door of the restaurant, he took my hand. “So this place has the best tamales, and the table side guac is the best.”

“That’s the one thing I miss about Austin. Good Mexican food.”

“Well, you’re in luck today because Farolitos is some of the best I’ve had anywhere.” He pushed open the front door and held it open while I walked inside. “Looks like they beat us here.”

His family was sitting at a large table on the far side of the restaurant. There were two empty spots between Keith and his sister Becca waiting for us. Once we were seated, his mother, Amanda, smiled at me from across the table. Nash briefly introduced us at the ceremony, but we hadn’t had a chance to talk at all. Although, she looked pleased that I was there.

“It’s nice to meet you, Spencer. I’m so happy you were able to join us.”

“I’m glad to be here. Nash has told me so much about all of you.”

“And all of it good, except for Keith, sorry, man, I can’t lie to my guy,” Nash said, giving his brother a shoulder bump.

“Don’t even start, boys,” Amanda said, giving them that look. The one that all mothers have that says they aren’t playing. “It’s bad enough when you get these two together, you should see them when Danny’s home.”

Nash had mentioned that his brother was overseas right now and hadn’t been able to come home on short notice for the ceremony. It sucked, but I guess that was life when you were in the military.

“I don’t know what you mean, Mom, we’re angels,” Nash said. “Right, Keith?”

He nodded. “Yep. Absolute angels.”

Becca let out a sound that was a half laugh, half scoff. “It’s only because it’s taken Nash forever to find a guy willing to put up with him that I’m refraining from pointing out what a load of bullshit that is. I’d hate to scare him off so soon.”
