He shrugged. “Sure. Grab the eggs and the milk out of the fridge while I get the other ingredients, and we’ll get started.”

A bit later, we’d put bacon in the oven with a timer, and he’d shown me how to make the batter and dip the bread. It wasn’t that difficult, just time-consuming, if you wanted to give the bread a chance to soak up plenty of the liquid so you would get a nice fluffy French toast.

“Why don’t you go set the table while I man the griddle pan?” he asked.

“Sure thing.” I went to the cabinet where he kept the plates and began to take down what we needed. “So we haven’t had a chance to talk this weekend, but I have news.”

“Okay.” He looked up from the pieces of French toast he was cooking. “What’s that?”

“I got a new job, or promotion, I guess would be a better way to put it.”

“But still at the horse rescue?”

“Right. I don’t plan on leaving there anytime soon unless they make me. I love working there. The people are great, and so is the work.”

I went over to the table and put out plates and silverware for each of us. At least the dishes at Spencer’s were his. He’d told me all about how his grandmother stocked his kitchen for him when he’d moved into the apartment.

“So what’s the new job then?” Keith asked.

“I’ll be handling the transportation of the horses and dealing with any problems that come up with the owners that either surrendered their horses or had them seized. The job title is operations manager, but I kind of think it’ll be more like ringmaster, to be honest,” I said with a laugh.

“That sounds just up your alley, Nash. I’m excited for you. It sounds like you really have found your place.”

“I think I have, but that’s not all. It comes with a house. I mean, not to own, but the position includes a residence on the property.”

“So no more bunkhouse living for you then.”

“Nope.” I glanced over my shoulder down the hall to where I’d left Spencer sleeping. “And that’s a great temporary solution to one of my biggest worries.”

“Oh?” He stopped what he was doing and looked at me. All I had to do was say I had a worry, and he launched right into big brother mode. “And what worry is that?”

“This thing with me and Spencer…I don’t want to let him go, but what kind of Daddy can’t even provide a home for his boy?”

“And you don’t think Spencer will be satisfied living there because you don’t own it?”

I shook my head. Keith wasn’t getting what I was saying. Spencer wouldn’t care; I knew that. This was all me. As his Daddy, I needed to take care of him, to give him the life I knew he deserved.

“Of course Spencer’s satisfied. This isn’t about him. This is about what I need, and I’m not sure it’s enough.”

Spencer

The sound of a text notification woke me up, which meant it was probably past my normal wake-up time, or I would have slept right through it.

I sat up in bed and was about to check my phone when I heard the sound again, but it came from the other side of the bed.

My silly Daddy had gone off and left his phone in the bedroom. I got out of bed and tossed on a t-shirt ‘cause I wasn’t about to parade around his brother’s house in nothing but my boxers. I checked the time and saw that it was indeed later than normal, and I was pretty sure I smelled coffee and bacon. If that was true, this would be the perfect start to what had already been a perfect weekend.

I grabbed his phone to take it to him and headed down the hall. I was about to call out to him when I heard voices coming from the kitchen. I wasn’t able to tell what they were saying until I made it to the end of the hallway.

“Of course Spencer’s satisfied. This isn’t about him. This is about what I need, and I’m not sure it’s enough.”

I knew it was too good to be true. I knew it. A sob caught in my throat, and Nash’s phone slipped from my hand and clattered to the floor.

Nash started toward me, then stopped short, brow creasing. “Spencer, what’s wrong?”

I held up my hand to stop him, trying my hardest not to cry. Not here in front of him and his brother. “You promised,” I choked out.

“Promised what, baby boy?”
