“Because you need this. I get that too. You need to prove you can do it and if competing in a room full of people is too much then this is how you’ll do it. He’s won for the past four years. You play him. One game or as many as you need to get this shit out of your system. You lose, then it doesn’t matter.”

“It will matter. To me.”

“Then don’t fucking lose.” I had déjà vu from the night Ty said those exact words to me the night I met my husband. Dreaux’s chin lowered and his eyes locked on mine seconds before he gripped my chin and slightly tipped my head back. “You can do this, yeah?”

I exhaled a slow breath and nodded. “I can.”

“You sure.”

“I’m sure.”

“Aight then. Your cue is on the table.”

My eyes drifted to that table and I recognized my cue, the one from the house when it dawned on me. “Is that my table?”

He smirked and nodded. “Figured that might help you relax some.”

How the hell did he get my table here without me knowing?

“Thank you.” I lifted on my toes and pressed a kiss to his mouth before heading to the table.

Timothy and I made introductions and I offered to let him break. He accepted and three games later, I was undefeated by everyone except my husband and one other. Dreaux had been the only person to ever beat me in a game of pool besides my father.

Timothy left with a sour mood I was glad he kept contained. Dreaux didn’t play about me. Aside from the unknown amount of money paid to Timothy ,Dreaux refused to disclose to me, I should have taken possession of his three-foot first place trophy.

I refused and let him keep it. That wasn’t why I needed the win. So Timothy left with a bruised ego, regional title still intact, and his trophy. I gained the confidence that I was still my father’s daughter, even in his absence. In a weird way today made me feel closer to him. It also made me love my husband even more if that was possible.

“Mommy, now that you won, can I play?”

“You can but remember what I taught you, don’t scratch the table.”

“I won’t,” JD sang in excitement. Dreaux pulled a chair to the table and JD climbed in it, lifting my cue which was too big for him but his little ego was so much like his father’s he made it work.

“Do you know how bad I want to fuck you right now after watching you rightly embarrass that man?”

“I do.” Dreaux palmed my ass and pulled me into his chest.

“I’m proud of you.”

“Thank you.” I beamed. His praise felt so much more rewarding than anyone else’s.

“Why didn’t you play like that the night we met?”

“Maybe I knew what you wanted and I wanted the same thing.”

“What you’re saying is that you fucked with fate to fuck me.”

I grinned and shrugged. “Fate put you there that night. The rest was up to us.”

“Nah, that don’t work.”

“It does if I say it does.”

He laughed lightly. “Yeah, aight. You better be glad I love your pretty ass. You can get that.”

“According to you, you’ll give me anything I want but a lie.”

“As long as you know.”
