Ty’s words halted when he stepped into the doorway with a scowl in place. Ty as in Rhoni’s cousin. I couldn’t remember his name until the woman he was with spoke it, but at least now I felt like there was hope of me locating the woman I was bound and determined to get my hands on. From the way his eyes narrowed I could sense he recognized me as well.

“Ay, head to the car. Let me holla at him really quick.” He extended a key fob to the woman whose eyes darted between us before she smirked, giving me a curious glance, accepted the key from Ty, and walked away.

“She here?” I asked, getting right to the point.

“No.” He locked his arms across his chest and angled his head to the side.

Aight, so this is what it is.

“She still live here?”

“Yeah.”

“You gonna keep giving me one-word answers?” I had no idea what Rhoni might have told him about us, if anything at all, so I wasn’t sure how this was going to go. I could deal with a pissed off family member if it meant getting one step closer to her.

“It’s been four years, why the fuck you care now?”

“What did she tell you?”

Might as well get this out of the way.

“Nothing, but she didn’t have to. Your actions said enough. I haven’t seen you around here, bruh.”

“Kinda hard to be here when I was doing a bid.”

His eyes narrowed disapprovingly. “You did time?”

“Four years. Turned myself in the morning after I met her.”

“What you go in for?”

“Wire transfers.”

I didn’t have to tell him shit but Rhoni was his cousin and the two were close. If I was going to be in her life, he was going to be in mine. And I was gonna fucking be in her life.

He frowned then his eyes lit with amusement as he searched my face trying to find the lie. There wouldn’t be one. “Damn, you’re dead ass?”

“Yeah, now you wanna tell me where I can find your cousin?”

“Nah, not yet.” He leaned against the door jamb. “She know where you been?”

“She knows. I was honest about everything.”

Too fucking honest for a one night stand.

“She know you were gonna come looking for her after you touched down?”

I shook my head. “It wasn’t my plan.”

“Then why are you here?”

Because I can’t get her out of my system.

“For the last four years, here is the only place I wanted to be. Me explaining myself, which I never fucking do, is proof of what I’m willing to do to be here, with your cousin.”

His brows pinched a little then he laughed, shaking his head. A hand raked over his head. His eyes lowered to the ground before I had his attention again. “She was hoping you would show up. I don’t know how the fuck I didn’t see the issue but it all makes sense now.”

I almost fucking smiled but I needed to know what made sense.
