Chuckling, I grinned at my soon-to-be brother-in-law. “I know. She pulled me into her dreamland. She tackled a vision—well, a series of visions—on her own without trouble, even though they were larger and more formidable than any I have ever seen before. All she needed was my presence to give her confidence, and she became the oracle she was meant to be.”

My love and admiration for her colored my words. Our mate bond was still strong, even though I now had four years of experiences she knew nothing about.

My feet slowed.

Lexi also had several years of life Lark didn’t know about. And of the two of us, she had changed the most. I wondered how he was going to take all those changes once the honeymoon energy was over. She was still impulsive and full of emotion, but she was now tempered by experience and maturity. She had discovered who she was and what she wanted. I wasn’t sure how he would deal with all of this.

Tamerin put a hand on my shoulder, startling me out of my thoughts. The rest of the group had already moved past me into the house, while I stood frozen out here, on the porch.

“You won’t solve any problems by just wrestling with them. You need to live each moment and move forward as you are meant to. If your lines merge, then that is right. If not, that is as it should be as well.”

I nodded, realizing the old man had guessed where my mind had gone.

He continued, a delighted glint in his eyes. “And I am doing the same. The witches have invited me to their lands to stay for a time. I would love to visit their library while I wait for my brother to arrive. Or after.”

Holden called to us from the kitchen. “Come in here, you two, so I don’t have to shout. I am trying to phone Dad again, since the last time the line dropped on us. Alemos will give us a boost, according to Lexi.“

Entering the room, I saw an expression of mild confusion on Holden’s face. Guessing as to why, I decided to give her a hint as to why my sister was confident about Alemos. “Lexi has tapped into talents she always had but didn’t know how to use. She has an empathetic kind of magic that helps her determine some things.” Moving over to my foster mother, I kissed her cheek affectionately.

Having grown taller, I could now meet my uncle's gaze. He grinned and shook his head. “It’s going to take me a bit to get used to this, Soren. You being so much older—and taller!—now. You are a replica of my brother.” He gave me a hug, pulling me in tight before letting me go. “Lexi is her mother and Betta is the best of both.”

My sister bounded into the kitchen, slowing as she got closer. She held out a leather sheath towards our uncle. “This is for you, Uncle Shane. It told me it wanted to be with you.”

Shane gazed down at the large Bowie knife and then back up to meet her gaze. “It told you?”

Chuckling, I leaned back against the island counter, knowing I would enjoy this. “Roll with it. Her weapons have opinions. Once they decide whose hand they will let weld them, that is it. It’s all I can say until you pick it up. Then you will understand.”

He stared down at the knife. Holden, Ravenal and James were all focused on him.

Maggie shrugged and started pulling vegetables out of the never empty refrigerator.

That still got to me. Alemos kept itself well stocked, placing delivery orders as necessary. Somehow, it could even put the goods away in the right places. To say this freaked me out a little was an understatement.

I then laughed at myself. I was freaked out because a house lived, but not about knives which made their desires known? Or an enormous alien cat-like being who talked to me telepathically and was my familiar?

In fact, where was the big guy?

I am down here by the gate because I wanted to talk to the demons. They have a few possibilities as to where my planet is located. I would like to figure this out because I would like to go home for a temporary visit. Not long, because I am now bonded to you, but it is always great to be with family, right?

I frowned. He must have gotten over his issue with the guardians, then. I could understand his desire to return to his world, though, after being stranded for some time. He deserved a chance to go see his relatives. We would go once we had a break, since I couldn’t imagine letting him travel alone.

I turned back to watch my uncle slowly take the knife sheath from Lexi’s outstretched hands. He wrapped one hand around the hilt and an expression of awe filled his face as he pulled the blade out of its sheath, exposing the weapon to the rest of us.

The metal she had used had been a black ore of some kind, almost like obsidian. A deep blue vein ran through it, giving it a mysterious glint. The gentle curves on one side were smooth, and the edge on the other appeared razor sharp.

He held it up to his face. “It sings,” he whispered.

Lexi stepped a little closer. “Ask it its name.”

Shane kept his eyes locked on the blade. “What shall I call you?” Reverence and awe filled his voice.

The room was silent as we watched this bonding play out.

A pleased emotion filled the Alpha's eyes, and he smiled. “Welcome to Earth and my hand, God’s Bane. If it is okay with you, I will shorten your name to Bane.”

Everyone gasped.

This weapon was meant to kill gods?
