Love… where the fuck did that spring from? Nah, definitely not going there….

“You didn’t do anything, Diesel, it’s me.” She pulled out of my embrace and stepped back until our gazes met. “You make it hard to think straight, hard to breathe, and I’m getting too wrapped up in you. Too wrapped up in this life we have right now.”

“And what’s wrong with that?” I loved coming home to her and Leo. “We have dinner together, spend time with Leo like a family, and our nights are out of this fucking world, sweetness.”

“Yes,” she agreed with a reluctant groan. “It is wonderful. It’s hot as fuck. But it’s not real, and it’s starting to feel real.”

“It’s real to me.” I took a step forward and she held her hands up and took a step back. I wanted to shout at the unfairness of her reaction, but I kept my cool. “It’s fucking real to me, Ellie. It is the realest goddamn thing I’ve ever had.”

“Everybody leaves.” She said the words as if they were gospel, as if it was a foregone conclusion that I would leave the same way everyone else had.

“I’m not going anywhere, Ellie. I’m right here.” I inhaled deeply and let it out slowly. “I didn’t expect you, my angry little pixie. I didn’t expect any of this, us especially. How in the fuck could I have expected a little wisp of a woman to swoop in and steal my heart? But you’re here, and you have me all wrapped up, and I ain’t about to let that go easily.”

“Don’t,” she whispered softly.

“Why not? It’s the truth.”

“It might be true now, but time changes things. It changes people and it sure as hell changes their feelings.”

I crossed my arms and glared at her. “Sounds to me like you’re worried your feelings for me might change.” That was meant as a challenge, and, as expected, fire lit her gaze.

“My feelings are what they are, Diesel, and that’s why I needed space. I can’t get too wrapped up in you because I’m the one who’ll end up heartbroken, I’m not the one with pussy on demand at my workplace.”

“I told her I wasn’t interested. You want space? To me it sounds like space is just an excuse because you’re scared.”

“I need space,” she shouted back.

“Then go to the goddamn guest room, I’ll try and keep out of your way. Just don’t just pack up and leave. What if someone had been in that house today? How would you have protected yourself, never mind Leo?”

“I would have managed.”

“No, you would have tried. But what if you had failed, what if you’d ended up like those dead girls and right now, I was trying to find my son and hoping like hell he was still alive?”

She went pale, which I hated, but I needed her to understand. “No.”

I hadn’t told her about Carter, or that Stacy had been working for him. She had enough on her plate already and I didn’t want to scare her further. As long as she promised to stay close to me until this was sorted, then everything was on a need-to-know basis, and right now she didn’t need that burden.

“Yes. Too much shit is going on right now to risk that, sweetness. We’re trying to find Stacy while we figure out who’s dumping teenage girls on our property for some unknown goddamn reason. Whatever we find on either front is bound to piss off at least one person, probably more, which means I need to know you two are safe. Always.”

At those last words, her fire seemed to vanish, and her stiff spine relaxed. Her determined gaze softened as she nodded her agreement. “Fine, yes. I agree.”

“Okay.”

“Good,” she shot back, arching a brow when I sent her a glare.

“Ellie,” I groaned, and reached for her, yanking her body flush against mine again. She felt so fucking good in my arms with her soft curves pressed against my body, her heart beating just inches below mine. “I can’t lose you or Leo. I won’t.”

“We’re fine. We’re right here,” she murmured against my chest. Ellie hugged me tight and let her hands run up and down my back. It was an act of affection that told me she felt what I did, and I needed to take things slow. She was skittish as hell, which meant I had to pace myself.

“You are.” I tilted her head so her big green eyes met mine because I wanted her to see how I felt about her. I needed her to know she was mine. “I’m glad.”

“Me too,” she said around a small, almost shy smile that I couldn’t resist.

“Good.” I leaned in close and took her mouth in a fiery kiss that soothed the angry beast fighting to get out. Her kisses, her very fucking presence, had a way of calming me down so that I could see the big picture, a surer sign than any that this was my woman. That she was meant for me.

Our lips and tongues danced together in a furious swirl of intense heat and desire, of raw, gritty need. Everywhere her hands touched set my flesh on fire. My cock stirred behind my zipper because he knew what the fuck was going on, but I talked him down and kept all of my focus on Ellie’s mouth, pink and full and sweet.

She groaned and rubbed against my cock before jumping in my arms, leaving me two handfuls of her beautiful ass as she ground against me. Another moan escaped and her hands tangled in my hair, deepening the kiss.
